it's funny because Breath of the Wild is the first Zelda game I'm actually interested in lol
you and I have opposite tastes I guess

Aw I can totally understand where you’re coming from! Personally, I like what they did with it and it opened Link’s world to a lot of gamers. The previous modern games weren’t as appealing so for me BOTW was a perfect blend of modern open world RPG and classic Zelda puzzle solving.

As a fan who's been here from the very start, I do feel what you're saying-- it is a bit annoying to hear people who have never even played another Zelda game proclaim that BotW is the best one, because, well, how can you know if that's the only one you've played?

That said, though... BotW is honestly really good. I feel Zelda is always at its best when it pushes boundaries and tries new things; the 3D-Zelda formula was starting to get old, and you could feel that very keenly in Skyward Sword. I feel like fans were hoping to recapture the magic of Ocarina of Time but the formula itself was the constraint [game start (quaint village) -> starter items/"tutorial" dungeon -> quest part 1 -> plot twist -> quest part 2 -> game end (defeat evil)]. It was tired.

Skyward Sword was definitely an attempt to buck the trend by trying to open up the world more, but it stuck to playing it safe in the end, and it suffered for it. One of the best storylines in the series is bogged down by its linear gameplay and the usual "new item that you use one time in one dungeon", and it was just really, really stark how badly the series needed a proper kick in the ass to rekindle itself.

I'm not saying BotW is flawless by any means-- I would have really liked more themed dungeons, the enemy variation was super lacking, and I wish a lot of the Shrine quests had been meatier and meant more, but good god did the rest of the game flourish. Having the entire world open to you the moment that your tutorial area was done was such a breath of fresh air, and I really loved that you could full-ass choose not to regain Link's memories or forge his new/old friendships. The items all having a hundred different uses was wonderful, and while I totally get why the weapon-degradation system was annoying for some I thought it was great-- I liked that Link was a warrior capable of wielding more than just a one-handed sword/shield.

Idk, the whole thing was just such a refreshing reset. I'm incredibly excited to see where TotK goes with this new formula.

I came around on BotW but it is one of the weakest Zelda’s for me. The lackluster shrines and missing dungeons, the same 10 enemies just in different colors, the empty world, the extreme lack of storytelling (even by Zelda standards lol), etc. Also my least favorite incarnation of the princess. I hope the sequel is better too, especially since people started talking about it’s flaws once the shiny newness wore off.

My first Zelda game was Breath of the Wild, and it's a fantastic game, but I have now played other games and I see why people said it wasn't a good Zelda game. It's quite different, but also excellent. And I love the others, too - especially Ocarina of Time. So much of BotW relates straight back to that. And the music is awesome.

Meanwhile the only Zelda games I've ever played have been Oracle of the Seasons and Oracle of the Ages on my Gameboy, so I have no context when people bring up Ocarina et al. Lol

My friend really likes BotW and she's played a few other Zelda ganmes. I watched on as she tri d to wrangle her horse. That looked cute.

Even for a short book, they still had to chop too much out. And WTF was going on with the Piper character? That was not book accurate even in the slightest, that not only contradicted the book but was so obviously pulled out from deep within some scriptwriter's ass.

I did like that one bust in "Boss Man's" office though, you know the one.

Taking a gap year before university

What do I do, do I apply normally but just tell the uni that I want to take a gap year first and I'm really applying for a year later, or do I just leave and wait a year to apply afterwards?
