They understood early on that this manager was a bad manager, rather than assuming they would be at least a normal person and being disappointed.

I still don't really get it. Unless they've done something with this information it means shit. Being disappointed from the start or just a bit later is more or less the same. You are in a shitty position with a shitty manager.
But probably I am reading too much into this

Yeah, but if you know they're a bad manager from the start there are things you can do to work around them and/or cover your ass to mitigate damage they might cause to your position. There's nothing like *you* getting screwed over or blamed for something because your *manager* is shit at their job.
