BTS isn't my cup of tea, but my god what a terrible way to respond to someone's interests. You've got to have a filter to be a decent manager!

(Anonymous) 2023-01-02 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
They sound like an asswipe, but there's no direct correlation between somebody's taste in music and their personality. Your assumption that disliking something you yourself like makes somebody worthless as a human being would rather make you the trash fire in fact.

(Anonymous) 2023-01-02 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe it's less about the awful manager disliking "Butter" specifically, but rather more about being the kind of person who asks someone what they're listening to, then promptly insults the person's musical taste and believes this is a socially acceptable thing to do?

(Anonymous) 2023-01-02 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
nayrt but this honestly. Hard to tell if OP was overreacting or not but people who yuck other people's yums, unprompted and unprovoked, kind of suck balls.

Please tell like everyone this. I was teased in school for liking the same popular ass pop music everyone else liked, so I now dread having to tell anyone that I like the same sugar pop fluff. Sure, I’ve developed a taste for some alternative stuff, but I prefer my fluff, and I get high school flashbacks every thing I have to admit that I’ve bought a Britney album past 2003.

NAYRT - This is what I got from the secret as well.

I kind of know how OP feels. I remember going into a small specialty fragrance shop and the shop owner asked me what my favorite fragrances were. I listed a few, mostly fairly classic ones. Her response was to tell me that designer fragrances are poor quality and watered down, and that niche fragrances were superior for that reason. I instantly realized I had no desire to ever buy from her shop. Who the hell asks you to tell them about your likes and then responds by insulting your taste?

At least I didn't have to work with that lady, though. OP, you have my sympathies. :/

That was my takeaway and like OP I think people who do that are trash and absolutely unsuited to management positions.

(Anonymous) 2023-01-02 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
But OP said in the secret: "if they were going to actively insult something I clearly enjoyed after going to the trouble to ask me about it, they were not going to be successful at managing people", ergo, trashfire, not that the manager's dislike of BTS made her a trashfire.

I think no matter the hobby or interest, if my brand new manager found out I liked something and then made a point of crapping on it, I'd not have a good first impression of them.

(Anonymous) 2023-01-03 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I second this!

(Anonymous) 2023-01-02 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry they were a dick to you

I usually take the piss out of my friends for their taste in music, but I would never do that to someone I just met

My best friend's reaction when I told her I thought the guy in my icon was good-looking was "Farin Urlaub, urgh!" but that was because we knew each other really well. (And I don't think she cares much for his music either.) But yeah, I wouldn't say something like that to someone I didn't know.

(Anonymous) 2023-01-03 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
What an asshat that manager was.

(Anonymous) 2023-01-03 06:07 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this manager is an asshole. I don't really understand how BTS helped you though. I mean, you worked with this manager still

(Anonymous) 2023-01-03 07:24 am (UTC)(link)
They understood early on that this manager was a bad manager, rather than assuming they would be at least a normal person and being disappointed.

I feel like I need more information on this, because "oh, that annoying song?" is kind of a mean thing to say, sure, but it's incredibly tame as negativity goes (compared to some of the things people say about others' interests right here on F!S for example).

Later on you add more genuinely awful things that happened later, but the origin of this seems like it's based in being melodramatically mad that someone doesn't love your fave.

(Anonymous) 2023-01-03 08:21 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with this. like saying a song is annoying does not make you a mean person even if someone says 'oh I like this band'. look at the discussion of 'come on eileen' in the comments section where GHG was like 'ugh' and no one thinks she's a shit person, even the person she was talking to? the manager may have sucked later for different reasons but not liking 'butter' is not one of them.

I mean, it's a pretty dickish thing to harsh someone's fun when YOU ASKED.

"What're you eating?"
"Pancakes."
"Oh. Those gross things?"

Instead of just being, you know, polite?

"What're you eating?"
"Pancakes."
"Oh. Have fun, then, person I met literally five minutes ago."

We’ve got a lot of young people here as well as a lot of poorly socialized people who grew up thinking that unprompted criticism of their interests was normal. We also have an influx of new trolls because someone invited a bunch of redditors to troll the comm for funsies.

But, either way, if you ask someone what they’re listening to (or reading, or watching, etc.) and then tell them it sucks, you’re the asshole. Particularly if you aren’t friends to begin with and you started the conversation out of the blue.

I mean, usually you can trust BTS stans to turn anything that isn't gushing praise of their faves into a perceived persecution campaign against their religion but in this case, the manager was a dick.

(Anonymous) 2023-01-03 03:22 pm (UTC)(link)
A recent garbage manager I had decorated the common area with a bunch of BTS posters on the first day. Our work has nothing to do with them and nobody else was into it.

I hate them by extension but I feel the canary in the coal mine thing, OP.

Butter *is* annoying, in the context of the cellphone commercials it was used in.

But then, BTS isn't my type of music.

Hopefully you will learn soon that just because people don't like stupid Asian boy bands, it doesn't mean they are "trash fires".

(Anonymous) 2023-01-03 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Hopefully you will learn how to not to be a raging asshole in public, but I’m not sanguine.

Hopefully you will learn soon that deliberately missing the point of someone's post in order to take potshots (potentially racist ones) doesn't make you right in any way.
