Taking a gap year before university

(Anonymous) 2023-01-02 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
What do I do, do I apply normally but just tell the uni that I want to take a gap year first and I'm really applying for a year later, or do I just leave and wait a year to apply afterwards?

Re: Taking a gap year before university

(Anonymous) 2023-01-02 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you apply, get accepted, then defer for a year

At least I think that's what I did (like 10+ years ago)

Pretty sure this is very country specific. I'm in Canada and I just applied whenever I was ready to go back to school (which I think was two years after I graduated?), but it could be different in other countries.

Typically you defer as mentioned above. I don’t think it’s as much country specific as university specific though. Check with your schools of choice. Some don’t permit deferment for various reasons, others won’t accept you if you didn’t apply before the gap year.

I think there's an option on the UCAS form to defer entry by a year.

Advice needed

Are there any good subreddits about parents of either ADHD or Autistic kids?

medical TMI

(Anonymous) 2023-01-03 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Does anybody know if urinary tract infections resolve themselves, or if antibiotics is the only way to fix them? Tried to schedule an appointment, but everyone is still closed. It's been about two weeks for me.

Signed,
Currently in Pain over the Holidays.

get thee to a doctor ASAP

UTIs are dangerous if left untreated! the infection will spread

You can alleviate the symptoms with cranberry juice and hot showers during the first few days (source: my mom who suffers from UTIs every year) but at this point in time you're playing with fire

I've had them, they're awful, aren't they? Unfortunately I've never heard of one resolving itself, you have to go to a doctor.

Re: medical TMI

(Anonymous) 2023-01-03 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
They can resolve themselves, but you leave yourself open to complications that can cause life long problems if you try to just tough it out. And that is best case scenario, because one of the complications from which you can't recover from is called death. You can't walk off a case of death. People have tried, didn't work. Honestly, if it has been two weeks and you are still in pain, then the Emergency Room beckons. I know that it is a pain going to one, especially with the pandemic still being a thing, and they take forever to see you, but you're already in the risk zone and rather than keeping on waiting even longer than that for everywhere else to open up, you can get your antibiotics and start your recovery at some point today. Just remember to mask up when you go.

An untreated UTI is a good way of becoming unalive.

Go to the ER. I had one when I was younger that I thought resolved itself but came back SO BAD a few days later. And when I told the Dr that I thought it resolved itself, he said that they don't ever resolve themselves.

Uh, well, the one time I didn't get one treated, it got worse and turned into a kidney infection. That was probably the worst pain of my life, would not recommend.

You need antibiotics, UTIs absolutely cannot resolve themselves. I’m sorry you’re going through this, nonnie :(

Re: medical TMI

(Anonymous) 2023-01-03 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Definitely get yourself to a doctor ASAP. Try an urgent care if you can't get an appointment with your regular doctor.

Re: medical TMI

(Anonymous) 2023-01-03 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
You need to see a doctor and get antibiotics, don't wait for this to resolve itself because the complications of an untreated UTI can be nasty. Try looking for an Urgent Care if you're in the U.S. If you've got a CVS Minute Clinic nearby, they can also treat them, I believe.

I had one go away on its own but it only lasted a day. Two weeks? I didn't even know they could last that long. (The other one I had, I went to urgent care the morning after the symptoms started but the symptoms were already going away by that point.) You need to find a way to go to a doctor so you don't get a kidney infection. Urgent care? Clinic in a pharmacy? Emergency room?

OP

(Anonymous) 2023-01-03 07:19 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you everyone for the good advice! It's been really frustrating trying to find doctors who are available over the holidays, as well as dealing with my mom who's been trying to give me over-the-counter homeopathy to deal with this. Sadly, there are no convenient CVS clinics in my area, RIP. If I see an urgent care clinic, I will run towards to it.

Inspired by #6 - the song that blew up

(Anonymous) 2023-01-03 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
What's the song that blew up or made that "crossover" that bought some of your favorite artists major attention?

Do you like it or not? Why?

Inspired by #6, because I was kinda peeved that the big songs for BTS to make that crossover in the USA mainstream were "Dynamite" and "Butter", when they had much better songs! How? I even liked that little bop they made with Halsey. Sorry, OP of #6. They're literally my least favorite songs (the first one I heard of theirs was "Fake Love" and I wanted to know more. "Dynamite" and "Butter" make me want to walk away. That said, clearly a lot of other people liked it so different folks, different strokes, right?).

Run Boy Run is probably my least favorite of Woodkid's songs from his album The Golden Age. But it is definitely the most popular. And blew up from commercials and show appearances.

Come On Eileen is probably Dexys' best song, because it's basically a completely perfect pop song and you can't get too angry about that. I do love it.

But it's also not very representative of the rest of their work. It's a lot goofier and more joyful. And the song also plays quite differently when it's heard in the context of the album and the band more broadly - for one thing, in the context of the album, it's much more of a cathartic release, rather than just a silly pop song as it can appear in isolation. For another thing, being familiar with the band adds a lot of context and depth to understanding Kevin Rowland and his feelings about identity, belonging, angst and the power of music to transcend barriers.

"Kiss Me" is Sixpence None the Richer's worst song hands down. I don't begrudge them the success, they deserved it, but it's a shame they couldn't score until they wrote an absolutely insipid love song for a rom-com movie. "Meaningless," "Field of Flowers," and the cover song "Bouquet" are a million ties better.

Argh

(Anonymous) 2023-01-03 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
Well if the "better chance of falling out of a cruising altitude passenger jet and surviving" lotto ticket I bought tonight is actually the winning one, I hope the person who finds it because I fucking dropped it is a nice person and donates at least half of the money to Planned Parenthood and food banks and bail funds and habitat preservation and stuff.

And I also hope my luck (and my pets) gets better because my cat and one of my chickens aren't doing well.
