Inspired by #6 - the song that blew up

(Anonymous) 2023-01-03 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
What's the song that blew up or made that "crossover" that bought some of your favorite artists major attention?

Do you like it or not? Why?

Inspired by #6, because I was kinda peeved that the big songs for BTS to make that crossover in the USA mainstream were "Dynamite" and "Butter", when they had much better songs! How? I even liked that little bop they made with Halsey. Sorry, OP of #6. They're literally my least favorite songs (the first one I heard of theirs was "Fake Love" and I wanted to know more. "Dynamite" and "Butter" make me want to walk away. That said, clearly a lot of other people liked it so different folks, different strokes, right?).

Run Boy Run is probably my least favorite of Woodkid's songs from his album The Golden Age. But it is definitely the most popular. And blew up from commercials and show appearances.

Come On Eileen is probably Dexys' best song, because it's basically a completely perfect pop song and you can't get too angry about that. I do love it.

But it's also not very representative of the rest of their work. It's a lot goofier and more joyful. And the song also plays quite differently when it's heard in the context of the album and the band more broadly - for one thing, in the context of the album, it's much more of a cathartic release, rather than just a silly pop song as it can appear in isolation. For another thing, being familiar with the band adds a lot of context and depth to understanding Kevin Rowland and his feelings about identity, belonging, angst and the power of music to transcend barriers.

hope you don't get mad but Come On Eileen is one of my least favorite songs of the 80's; the only thing I like about it is the fact that the title sounds like a porn.

I mean I still think you're wrong and it's brilliant, but I also recognize that it's also been hideously overplayed, which is especially harmful considering how catchy it is

And it does sound like a porno, yes

"Kiss Me" is Sixpence None the Richer's worst song hands down. I don't begrudge them the success, they deserved it, but it's a shame they couldn't score until they wrote an absolutely insipid love song for a rom-com movie. "Meaningless," "Field of Flowers," and the cover song "Bouquet" are a million ties better.

AYRT
I'm going to have to check those out! I really like "Kiss Me" lol but I like their sound in general! So thanks for the recs!

np! I've been following them since their 1993 debut, though I'm not sure how easy it is to find hard copies of Fatherless & the Widow and This Beautiful Mess. they're on Spotify at least. TBM is a brilliant album, overall, very well-crafted with shifts in mood so it's not all 100% melancholy all the time.

For Ghost, Mary on a Cross. Caught on on TikTok. Two-edged sword, though. Anything that gets them more fame is good, but this particular surge turned what is normally not a particularly gatekeepery fandom into 'get out, newbies!' pretty quick. Mostly, I think, because a lot of the TikTok fans were rather...offensively offended when they found out what the band was like and actually listened to the lyrics of MoaC. (I was quite satisfied by the sudden hate of the song, since, while I did like it, it was, IMO, the weaker of the songs on Seven Inches of Satanic Panic, and the love of it before the TikTokening was confusing.)

Looking up the lyrics sort of annoyed me because I thought they were saying Mariana, which is a name in its own right, but it was actually Mary on a [cross].

I think "Welcome to the Black Parade" is the song that made MCR mainstream (at least, it was the song that all my classmates liked after giving me shit for liking that "vampire emo band") and I do like it, but they have a whole bunch of better songs. "Disenchanted" and "The Sharpest Lives" are the better songs from Black Parade IMHO.

Also, I agree with you, OP. I like BTS, but I can't stand "Butter" or Dynamite".

I honestly didn't know that was the song that made MCR "mainstream". My vote on that album would be for "Teenagers" or "Mama".

I'm an American, and my first exposure to Måneskin was their cover of "Beggin." I liked it well enough to check out their other music, and, um, "Beggin" kind of sucks compared to what I now know they're capable of doing. 😅 I even like most of their other English songs better (though I do still have a soft spot for it).

Same.

I discovered I actually liked them the first time I heard "I wanna be your slave".

David Bowie's "Let's Dance" along with the album by the same name made him into a commercially successful rock star where previously he was more of an alternative, cult following kind of artist. I don't mind it. The album is fine, with some good pop songs that also did very well - "China Girl", "Modern Love", etc.

A lot of diehard Bowie fans have mixed feelings about it, because they don't feel like it's his best or most artistically challenging work, even if it was a huge commercial boost for his career. It's not my favorite, but I like it. My favorite albums vary according to my mood but generally I like Ziggy Stardust and Station to Station. Heathen was also very good.

David Bowie was a major star in the 70's, I was around then. (Ziggy is one of the best albums he ever did IMHO)

I don't mean to imply that he wasn't a star, just that his career prior to Let's Dance was far less mainstream. LD was a new level of commercial success for him.
