OH god, Avatar fandom, can you ever just freaking stop. Like can we all just accept that people like different things and not everyone is going to like the same things as you.

I swear this fandom grows more stupid by the hour.

I am just tired of the stupid ship stuff, but as a whole Avatar fandom isn't welcome and it has stopped being fun for a while.

I just would like to be in a fandom where you aren't being attacked for your freaking pairing or character preferences.

Good luck finding one of those. Just about every fandom I know of has those same problems to one degree or another. :\ It's just a fact: you get a large group of people together and there's going to be conflicting opinions. It's just unfortunate that some characters/pairings get more shit than others.

Um I think the point that gets me is to one degree or another, most of my other fandoms don't have this problem anywhere near the degree of Avatar.

That and the general spaces tend to be much more tolerant of differing views. Or where people seem to be ok with differing opinions.

The thing with fandoms is that you can be involved in large section of it and completely unaware of the opposing opinions/behaviors of other, equally sized portions.

A few years back, I ran with a chunk of Naruto fans in an RP who were predominantly tolerant of any pairings -- people had the ones they hated, but they didn't get nasty about anyone else liking them, and the RP was itself was "anything goes". It was a big group and my introduction to Naruto fandom, so I was completely shocked to discover the pairing wars that raged over the main Naruto forums. Like, I knew from my stint in Harry Potter and Gundam Wing fandoms that pairing debates could get pretty vocal, but this was ridiculous.

When it comes to fandoms, it's really about what section you find yourself in.
