Given that, yes, sometime female LI characters can be badly written, so not all of the dislike is inappropriate story-wise...

I'd say there's an aspect of basic ship wars about it. The Girl is getting in the way of the ship that a particular viewer wants to see, she takes up screentime that could be devoted to the Favoured Ship, her presence implies one half of the Favoured Ship might be Unfaithful to his True Love. Also, some viewers have issues with Media Femininity (and I can't say that I don't tbh) and take it out on The Girl.

And it's a bit sad, because the presence of a third party, either as a friend or as a destabilising influence on the romance, can make for some really interesting story-telling. Dismissing a character out of hand when a fic-writer could be exploring their I Wants and personal story arc and their effect on other characters is, it's just a little boring. I mean, write the fic that makes you happy, yeah? But I tend to find it boring to read.
