The queerbaiting gets a no from me.

Actors shipping their own characters isn't queerbaiting.

the what?

The closest thing to what could be called queerbaiting is Jenna Ortega making a tweet about Wednesday being a "queer icon" very early on. But later it got deleted. So either the show was originally going to be queer but then changed (which sucks but isn't queerbaiting, just shitty executive meddling) and she took it down to prevent people from getting queerbaited, or she just tweeted as her headcanon and was told by someone else to take it down, possibly to prevent queerbaiting!

Of course it's very possible that AYRT just thinks anything where a gay ship is popular but not canon is queerbaiting.

And they really were covering their bases because "queer icon" doesn't necessarily mean "this character/celebrity is queer," it can also mean "this character/celebrity is popular with queer people" (see Madonna as a "gay icon" eg). Which is true.

IDK, it just rubs me the wrong way when media will do everything to be queer-friendly except have actual queer characters...oh, and the "werewolf conversion therapy" joke didn't help in the slightest. No thanks.

You might want to find a better source for pre-screening media. The werewolf conversion therapy wasn’t a joke and it’s actually a great opening for family discussion about letting children be themselves.
I didn’t see anything in any episode to make me think they’re being queer-friendly minus having queer characters. They DO have queer characters. And there was never any queer-baiting so again, maybe look for fresh source. The show may not be to your tastes in which case just don’t watch it but it’s bullshit to make those claims when you haven’t seen it. If they were true, you’d know because a lot of people would be talking about that instead of how much they loved Jenna Ortega and the show in general.

From a representation standpoint, this show has more than average going for it. POC lead actress, canon queer couple (though admittedly not a main pairing), the juggernaut fandom pairing is femslash (and you can see above that some people don’t like the show because of it), the usual teenage issues of cliques, bullying, romance, parents, and struggling with self identity and fitting in are all handled realistically. The audience is massive; it isn’t just the teens watching it but their parents, too. That helps bridge the gap in families when it comes to handling those issues IRL.

It’s not a perfect show (are any?) but it isn’t the disgusting no-homo yuk fest you’ve decided it is.

The werewolf conversion camp thing was clumsily handled, and it made me cringe, but it definitely wasn't a joke. The fact that it was trying to address a serious issue and it ended up being ridiculous and unintentionally comical was the whole problem I had with it. What's the trope word for it? "Narm"?
