I first watched Eva when I was 11/12 years old and back then I HATED Asuka because she was too much like my older sister re: super aggressive because of her insecurity.
Then I rewatched the series and the movies more than once during the last 2 decades and, while Asuka is not my favourite character (Shinji is), I think she is one of the best and most well written in the series. I really appreciate her now.
Not counting the Asuka in the new movies. I really don't like what what they've done to her there. Rei is the true shining star of the new movies, hands down.
