NAH, you're fine.

I think NGE is one of those anime you can truly appreciate when you're kind of young and in your "emo phase" (I am biased though, because I was young and was probably having my first depression round back when I first watched it). It was really impactful back in the '90s because almost no one was expecting THAT LEVEL of mind fuckery, nihilism and violence in a mecha anime, but now you know what it is all about so the novelty is not there anymore.
The animation is still great and it has one of the best anime OST ever, but it's an anime that you REALLY REALLY want to watch. It's unneccessary heavy and seriously not THAT deep, apart from the psychological aspect of the characters. It's excellent for that, especially for the time, but even now. But a lot of fandom makes it out to be "the bestest deepest shit ever" and IT IS NOT LOL
I say this ad a huge NGE stan who has also played almost all the games and read all the spin-off barred one, even the shittiest ones. Evangelion is GOOD, but not THAT good. And if you go into it as an adult thinking it's going to be the best series ever then... you'll probably be disappointed IDK
