DA

Well, he must have had something, because in that flashback Andi was explicitly assembling a group of people who could synergise into something interesting.

Since Miles is neither particularly charismatic nor intelligent, inherited wealth might be that something.

That said - it is reading between the lines, and if somebody had a different explanation I wouldn't disagree with them.

We know that Miles had an almost delusional level of self-belief and an almost complete lack of moral scruples. And I think those are the qualities that allowed him to be successful, up to a certain point. Because those things actually do go a long way in the American business world. Just continuously pushing and scheming and putting yourself forward at all costs can get you pretty far, especially if you're a white man and so on. Even if you're a moron and a fraud.

Those characteristics are also things that Miles has in common with the RL people that he's most closely based on. Steve Jobs, Elizabeth Holmes, Mark Zuckerberg, etc.

Holmes grew up with the money and the connections. Zuckerberg just had the connections.

I don't think that what either of them did was primarily a function of having money or connections, though. And Steve Jobs didn't really have either.

Their ability to do it may not have been a function of having money and connections, but having the money and connections to get it noticed, promoted and funded while not having to worry about starving or becoming homeless certainly helped. Stick a teenaged Zuckerberg in a public high school and obscure state college in Arkansas instead of Exeter and Harvard and he doesn’t get any dumber, but I’d bet real money that he doesn’t move as far or as fast. Steve Jobs are few and far between.
