every secret Santa I participated in, I gave something the recipient liked a lot. I didn't get anything. In most cases I don't even know who got my name in the drawing.
I don't participate in secret Santas anymore.

I used to participate in online Secret Santa type exchanges and swaps but gave up for similar reasons. I'd try to put effort into it, but some of the stuff I got in return was just... random crap they stuffed in a box. It was just clear they'd put very little effort into finding things that fit my likes/dislikes and when I (very politely) inquired about the contents because I couldn't believe it wasn't a mistake of some kind, they just mumbled excuses. Not doing that again.

This is going to sound elitist, but the way to do this is have a closed secret Santa with a group of your fandom friends who are good writers and not flaky.

NAYRT
I don't have friends close enough to do something like this

Well, yes, your chances are better at getting feedback for your gift with a smaller group, but still not guaranteed.

And as the other anon demonstrated, not everyone is lucky enough to gather such folks for that purpose.
