I liked a lot of things about 2005 Pride and Prejudice and Mr Bennet was one of them, because it explained a lot about their situation and Mrs Bennet's behaviour. No points for how they dressed him, though.

(Also, 1995 Mr Bennet may have been more emotionally affected by his failings, but he still didn't do anything about them, so all the wit in the world doesn't really endear him to me.)

Mrs Bennet behaves like she does because that's who she is. Their situation is because their father planned to have a son and never saved for their dowries. Also he prefers to chill in his study with a book than anything else.

You don't really need anything more beyond that.
