Hard same. As much as I love aspects of the 2005 movie, the styling in general was... Bad. Even though I understood what they were going for, I need my regency classics to remain accurate to the source material.

1995 version remains superior and I feel the same way about Mr Bennet.

Agreed. I thought Keira Knightley looked great... but not for a period drama of that era. Her everyday running around in a loose modern hairstyle or a man's shirt and vest looks nicer to modern audiences, but it just felt a bit out of place for Jane Austen. I don't even know how to explain the 2005 Mr. Bennet. I'm no expert but uh... what's up with that hat? Did country gentlemen wear tricorn hats around casually?

Same here. Just adored 1995 Mr. Bennet.

I really liked Darcy in the 2005 version. Not better than Colin Firth but I liked him - he really made me believe he was a rich snob who grew as a human being.

But most of the rest was unimpressive to me.

I liked a lot of things about 2005 Pride and Prejudice and Mr Bennet was one of them, because it explained a lot about their situation and Mrs Bennet's behaviour. No points for how they dressed him, though.

(Also, 1995 Mr Bennet may have been more emotionally affected by his failings, but he still didn't do anything about them, so all the wit in the world doesn't really endear him to me.)

Mrs Bennet behaves like she does because that's who she is. Their situation is because their father planned to have a son and never saved for their dowries. Also he prefers to chill in his study with a book than anything else.

You don't really need anything more beyond that.

Firm agree.

This is my general gripe with the 2005 version. Too many nods to modern sensibilities/ aesthetics.

Though I did like that they showed a bit more of a rustic lifestyle for the Bennets that brought home a bit more the rich snob vs country gentry. And the new dialogue. And the hand!!!

But 1995 is still the perfect adaptation to me.

A bit of rusticity is one thing, but being a family whose estate is in the country doesn't mean that the gentleman and head of the household is going to be personally mucking around in the stables. Mr. Bennet is still a certain level of rich (below Mr. Bingley and Mr. Darcy, sure) that takes place geographically in a rural area. In the novel, Mrs. Bennet makes a note of fussing about Mr. Collins' faux pas of assuming that one or any of his female cousins had a hand in preparing dinner, because that's not something a gentleman's daughter generally would've done, even in the country.

The 1995 series is definitely my favourite.
