I'd say don't be too hard on yourself. Just by virtue of being a celebrity, I can pretty much guarantee there are more people hoping for his speedy recovery and worrying until they know he's going to be okay than there would be for anyone less visible. If the main thing he was doing in relation to you was being paid to portray a character you'd rather someone else portray there's nothing terrible about owning that. You would have felt the same about that side of it if he'd announced he was quitting the role, right? So it's not because you hate the guy.

It's normal psychologically for first thoughts to be selfish like that. It doesn't mean you're a bad person. This is the first I heard about this and my first thought was "Oh god, that sounds horrifying, I can't imagine what the pain must be like," which is pretty much thinking about myself first too, because I was imagining the same thing happening to me.
