I used to think this was my opinion too. I realized what I actually hate are default-dere tsunderes (the type whose default personality is friendly) and those are usually female. The classic "girl who punches the guy she likes because she tripped and he accidentally saw her panties" is almost always this type. Hate those. But I love default-tsun (the type whose default personality is angry or cranky and standoffish) and male tsunderes are almost always this type. There are some default-tsun female tsunderes though, and I love them too. I don't think I've ever seen a default-dere male tsundere. Thus I thought my issue was gender.

But it's ok if yours is gender. The comment above about character archetypes being gendered and it affecting how we feel about characters is true.

Er, doesn't, 'outwardly grumpy but with a secret tender heart to be nourished by the right person' cover about two-thirds of male protagonists anyway?

Sorry, I don't mean to be snarky, but I honestly don't know where you're coming from, OP.

In certain genres maybe? Was this meant to be specifically about romance? I wasn't thinking of just romance and its subgenres (I don't tend to go for those), I was talking every type of media, across the board. And while it's normal for male protagonists to be more standoffish or grumpy than female ones, I wouldn't say it's most of the ones in things I like, and that alone also doesn't make a tsundere. If he doesn't suddenly go from cranky to getting flustered and denying his feelings in an adorable soft way (that's the "dere") then he's not a tsundere, he's just a guy who's bad at admitting his feelings.

Oh, so the sudden swerves? Yeah that makes sense. Thanks for explaining!
