Given that it is such a simple, easy thing to fix, I find it very hard to feel bad for writers who can't be bothered to do so. Sorry.

Actual explanation from a wall-of-text writer:

“I, like many people who have problems with Astigmatism (eye disorder, kinda like near/far sightedness, requires glasses), have problems with skipping lines while reading. Then, when there are too many lines that seperate sentences, I can actually skip an entire dialog phrase and the other details of the "mini-paragraph" and accidentally read the one ahead of it. I also got one of those nasty Astigmatism problems where I have different dilations in both my eyes.”

Personally, I find this person’s writing completely unreadable.

Huh. I have astigmatism in one eye much more than the other and I find walls of text much more straining to read.

Right? I have terrible eyes (so bad I can't get lasik) and an astigmatism. Walls of texts are impossible to read.

I have 20/20 vision and walls of text give me a headache.

I too have astigmatism and near-sightedness (and I'm dyslexic, to boot) and walls of text are the exact opposite of something I'm able to read. >>

(Anonymous) 2023-01-18 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
That might explain* why the author would format it in wall of text while writing, but not why they'd choose to do it in the final draft if they plan on posting it for a general audience.

* And frankly, still sounds like BS to me

Well, the solution here is for them to do paragraph breaks after they proofread or ask their beta to do it so other people can read the fic.

I mean, ?????

(Anonymous) 2023-01-18 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Probably works for this person, but I have astigmatism too (it's not rare) and small text or wall of text is completely unreadable for me.
I don't think it's because of my astigmatism though. Probably my far sightedness's fault, since it's way worse. Or probably my ADHD.

IDK people, just don't write wall of text, please.

I have horrible astigmatism (doc said my eyes were more football shaped than spherical), and a wall of text is utterly unreadable to me.

(Anonymous) 2023-01-19 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
I made it three lines into that excuse before my astigmatism noped outta that bullshit.

(Anonymous) 2023-01-19 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
As someone with retinal migraines, they're a huge "no-no" for me too.

I accept that asking this may make me look like an idiot, but what is the easy fix?

Aside from having to put in the spaces between paragraphs yourself on AO3 - the block of text seems to stay that way no matter what format I put it in between html to rich text, despite having had put in all the spaces in my original document.

My way around it in recent years has been to copy and past it into a DW post and copy from there to the rich text setting with no problem.

Hi anon, I'm not sure if you'll see this (I was super behind in reading FS) but copying/pasting into AO3's Work Text box should not cause a wall of text. I'm not sure what word processing program you use, but there is a script for Google Docs that fixes formatting before you copy/paste into AO3: https://docs.google.com/document/d/19eZnBQ4989Dr17v2ODFgE8QWAo9Oahi4USDNS3hOSvM/edit

If you use something besides Google Docs, then it might depend on your formatting. Are you indenting paragraphs? That's not advisable due to how it messes up formatting, and it's not needed with screens. Are you hitting enter twice between paragraphs?

I also find it really hard to read when so many "paragraphs" are just one relatively short sentence.

When they don't need to be, I mean.

Like, it doesn't seem to have been a deliberate choice used sparingly for emphasis or pacing.

Or a section of dialogue where there's a few single lines going back and forth.

They just do this, for no reason I can fathom.
