...so what you're saying is...people who think Lynch's stuff is weird are on the spectrum? And people who are not on the spectrum think it's fine?

Correct me if I'm wrong.

I am not on the spectrum at all, and his stuff is fucking out there and, to me, not really all that enjoyable.

I think OP is saying that Lynch himself is on the spectrum and grew up alienated, and that's why he makes films that many find weird.

Personally I would say that Lynch's movies are pretty weird by just about any standard whether you're neurotypical or not, but who knows, I guess.

Huh. I guess; it's a kind of hard secret to parse.

"I think OP is saying that Lynch himself is on the spectrum and grew up alienated, and that's why he makes films that many find weird." Thank you, anon. That is indeed what I meant.

What I'm NOT saying though is that the movies are completely fine and normal if you're autistic. There is stuff that is intentionally strange and disorienting to any audience member, but I notice when people conflate the stuff that is intentionally weird with stuff that is not intended to be weird. And/or just seemingly work very hard to gloss over the important and straight forward themes of some stories (such as the abuse of the vulnerable, the painful and silent ignoring of someone in clear distress), by lumping it all together as "strange lol."

A lot of those themes of alienation, of not being able to ask for help in any meaningful way that matters, of not being heard really do strike home in terms of autism.
