Daily pet routines

[personal profile] philstar22 2023-01-20 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
What routines do your pets insist on having happen every day? Or what are there favorite things to do with you?

My kitty jumps up on my lap for her morning pets every morning. She will insist. As soon as I sit up for the first time, she climbs right up and starts rubbing against me until I start the pets.

She also prefers it when I lay down for a little while before dinner so she can take a little nap on top of my legs.

whenever I come home (from work or just being out), my cat insists on being picked up and cuddled. He doesn’t let me do this any other time, will protest it to hell and back if I do, but when I come home it’s hugging time. he’s p much my therapy animal so I do wonder if he knows I need that relief after a long day

Dawww. He's reminding you that you are his and that you shouldn't leave him. And yes, he probably knows that you need it as much as he does. Cats are very good at knowing these things.

My dogs get a night time snack at 8pm every day. On weekdays this is after Jeopardy airs, so as soon as they hear the Final Jeopardy music they will both get up and run to the kitchen expectantly, even if no one says a word about 'snack.'

Aw. Animals are smart. They are very good at learning routine and little cues that we don't even always notice we are making.

One of the dogs is mine and the other belongs to my parents, and my dog in particular is really good with picking up on things all on her own. When she was a baby I would say 'time to go to bed' after taking her out at night and she'd go right into her crate, and now if I say it she goes straight to my room since she sleeps on my bed (when she was a puppy she also figured out 'time for [dog] to go in her cage' when people were leaving the house and would go in there all by herself, and she was confused at first when we decided she was trained well enough she didn't need to go in there anymore). Also in the morning everyone has breakfast and then my mom takes her dog to her bedroom to go back to bed, while I work from home so I always tell my dog 'time to go to work!' and she will run right down the hall and stand in front of my door, and then when I let her in she curls up in her dog bed.

When I get up in the morning (or get home from work), I rinse and refill water dishes, fill food dishes, and do the cat boxes, then take bird seed out to the outside birds. Everybody comes sloping into the kitchen to watch/drink the brand!new!water and nibble some food. Diana camps the back door, wailing, so she can rush out and terrify the birds, heh.

My dog requires that there be a little parmesan cheese sprinkled into his food in the morning. If it isn't there then he refuses to eat it.

One of ours will immediately jump onto the bed and headbutt us when my alarm starts going off, because she knows that means it's breakfast time.

She also has a bizarre obsession with straws. I use one for cold drinks because my teeth are sensitive and she will harass me until I give it to her to play with. If I leave it unattended she'll grab it out the glass and dash off. I keep finding it in weird places.

Ever since we started working from home, one of my cats, Reznor, insists on sitting on my lap as soon as I start work. He then insists around 10:45 that I sit on the couch so he can sit on my lap there. Then he sits in the hall, where we give him his dental treats, a good hour or two before treat time, because he doesn't want to miss it.

Dog has discovered the loveliness of being fully under the covers in the winter so will stare at us until we let him crawl under at bedtime.

Not a routine as such, but he has a habit of bringing in things from the yard that he shouldn't have, and as a puppy we'd bribe him with a tiny biscuit to get him to drop the (non toxic but messy) seed pod or whatever.

Now he just brings in seed pods to exchange for a biscuit.

My cat also loves to lie on my legs while I'm watching TV or reading/playing games in my recliner. Oddly she doesn't seem to want to do this when I'm in bed. I end up sleeping in the recliner to get maximum kitty cuddles.

She doesn't really react to my leaving but when I come home it's time for food and she runs to the door (don't know how she knows it's me) and meows her fuzzy little butt off. If I delay food too long she starts with the "love bites." I love her though.

Around 7pm our cat insists on being 'put to bed.' She'll stand in the hallway and yowl until you come to her, and from there you have to walk backwards (so that you're always facing her to keep her attention or she won't follow you) around our parents' bed to the leather desk chair where she likes to nap for the evening. She has to hop on the bed first and rub on some toys before she moves to the chair, and you have to stay there until she does or she won't understand it's bedtime and will leave and go back to hall screaming.

Cats are cats. There's a reason cat videos are so popular. Cats are weird, funny, feisty, precious, everything good.

My cats have a favorite toy that is a.... hair elastic. Youngest plays with it, oldest doesn't, but have a need to announce finding it by absolutely hellish yowling. So they randomly through the day carry elastic from room to room and yowl.
