Honestly, if that's something you privately feel, I have absolutely no problem with it. It's the people who run around yelling that a particular celebrity MUST be [insert identity] and act like it's a huge personal betrayal and a lie if the celebrity happens to state that they're not. And yes, the prevalence of closeting in some times and cultures adds to that, but I don't see what posting absolutely totally true theories on TikTok or Tumblr is going to do about it.

I agree so much with this - I hangout in Youtube-based fandoms and the amount of times people have gotten the bright idea to not only ship irl people, but to direct questions/fanworks at those people and get surprised when the youtubers show any discomfort (the one that stays in my mind was the one time someone asked a youtuber if he was bisexual and when he said that he wasn't because he id as straight - there was a legit discussion about whether or not that made him homophobic. I felt like my brain was going to melt out of my ears just from just reading it).

I had to re-read the moment that stayed with you because wtf...? Aside from the fact that the way a person id's is no one else's business.... I'm guessing these were kids who need to go outside/spend some time interacting with people IRL.

da

they are sadly often not children...

I...am not sure that going outside/spending time with people IRL is necessarily a cure-all. For all we know, these people (of any age) could be interacting IRL with people who have no respect for boundaries. And given how thin/blurry the line between real life and digital interaction has gotten, I wouldn't be surprised if more people with offline social lives/activities start engaging in this type of behavior.

You make a very good point! I actually want to start a thread in the GC section about this (that thinning line between online and real life, how often do we see it, online leaking into RL, be it words and ideas to the way people actually treat each other). Anyway, you're making a very good point, who knows the realities and boundaries of these individuals.
