Re: Based on #4, Fandoms you just don't understand

I'm a little confused about C-Drama/book fans online since most of the ones I hear from aren't in China, don't speak/read any version of Chinese, and don't actually seem to like anything very much. Why are you jumping through so many hoops? Is it just that you keep getting deeper and deeper after watching a good subtitled show?

I am not c-drama fan by any stretch, but are you only interested in media in English? No translations? No different culture? That's bleak

Officially translated or subtitled into English? Hell yes. No language just pictures? Same!

I have to place a money order for a novel from China through an untranslated website to access an unofficial fan translation? How did I get here? That's what I would like to know.

that's fair. But frankly I think it's just another step. I don't really find it that weird since I am not from English speaking country. Most of my entertainment has couple of extra steps. We don't get official Korean translations, we have fan translators who are extremely good. A lot of western shows are translated and often dubbed by unofficial groups. We have some official translations of course but often enough official translation is way worse. Or employs big unofficial groups. So Chinese novels just another thing people enjoy. Whatever

DA

...or you can just access the unofficial fan translation, you know. It's called piracy and I guess this is what most people do. Of course, you can always go back later and buy the work if you enjoyed it, but.

Another anon, but unless the unofficial translation was put out by Disney or something that seems like a particularly douchey use of piracy.

What? Sorry I am afraid maybe we aren't talking about the same thing. Not a fan of c-novels in any way, but... fan translators put translations of the novels on their blogs, right? Or those wattpad-like websites. And the translations are uploaded for free, and you can access them for free. What makes you believe that most people who read them actually own the original Chinese book?!?

That’s… a weird take. Have you ever stopped to consider just how many people who don’t speak English all over the world are fans of categories such as “bad US American reality show” and “unfunny US American comedy sitcom”? Or even I don’t know, Indian movies or Mexican novellas or Korean dramas. It’s not unheard of u kno enjoying things from other cultures

I get translated stuff, I love anime same as everyone else, but C-Drama novel fans seem to be on another level. Like, around the time you're reading guides and setting up temporary credit cards and worrying about getting put on watch lists I would like a flow chart.

There are barely any official translations and once there is one, you just buy that and not the untranslated version. And the fantranslators who demand proof of purchase before you get the fantranslation are few and far between. So I don't really know what you're even talking about.
