I feel like this has a lot to do with a generation of fandom people who have been more demanding of fandom 'content' - like people who act like not making the specific fics they want to see is an act of injustice instead of actually trying to write it themselves, or can't quite add the dots on how much emotional labour goes into creating fanworks (even if it is created from a shared interest) - so it leads to situations like this where instead of saying thanks or a bare-bones compliment, they just don't say anything at all.
