The writers have said that Spock/Uhura is just a place holder; that she will eventually become the love interest for Kirk.

I agree with you about the awkwardness. I felt uncomfortable watching Spock and her; partially because I don't think the actress was that great and partially because I was uncomfortable watching such a great and iconic female character being reduced to "the love interest" with no other purpose.

(Anonymous) 2009-05-16 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Where did they say she'd eventually hook up with Kirk? Because I can't remember hearing that anywhere, but there's a bunch of comments about it here.

Did I miss something?

[identity profile] heather.livejournal.com 2009-05-17 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
No, as far as I know you haven't missed anything. I've heard nothing about the next film.

[identity profile] thelenking.livejournal.com 2009-05-17 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
All the interviews I've read have been to the contrary. Stating that Uhura would most likely ALWAYS pick Spock over Kirk because he's more HER type. If they change that to appease these idiot fans they're not fit to have their jobs.

(Anonymous) 2009-05-17 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
I've read interviews where the writers talk about the subtexty nature of their relationship on the show and where Zoe talks about how she believes Uhura would pick staying in and studying over the party mentality (which.. kind of goes against the whole bar scene), but I haven't read anything which would completely rule out the possibility of her falling for Kirk eventually.

[identity profile] thelenking.livejournal.com 2009-05-17 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
is there a reason that people want her to hook up with Kirk outside of the TOS kiss? In that episode the characters were being forced to kiss one another, and the only reason that it wasn't between Spock/Uhura is because The Shat wouldn't have it.

(Anonymous) 2009-05-17 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
I've heard a number of stories about why the kiss happened between her and Kirk in that ep instead of her and Spock. From Shatner's ego to something about them originally wanting it to be Spock because the interacial aspect was less offensive if it was an alien. All of which have come from actors/writers in their books or at conventions. At this point, I don't know if any of them even truly remember what is and is not the truth.

Frankly, I don't particularly care who she ends up with (although, like the OP, I found Spock/Uhura uncomfortable to watch because I felt the same way - that it was like watching siblings awkwardly make out), nor do I insist on Kirk/Uhura because of that scene.

I just think it's odd to act like just because it happened in this film, it will remain through all future endeavors. Especially in a franchise where relationships tend to have an expiration date.

[identity profile] thelenking.livejournal.com 2009-05-17 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
Well, as I'm beginning to observe, a lot of people seem partial to Spock staying with her because a lot of us are convinced that he's not a fickle man when it comes to relationships. We're interested in the fact that they picked one another. Uhura could easily hook up with other cadets, but she likes Spock, and chose him over Kirk types. Spock has issues with emotion and seems very closed off to romance because he's so calculating, and yet, here they are, with each other. It just seems that each character would try to hold onto this relationship because there's got to be something about it for it to work in the first place.

She might. But I don't see that as being true for him. He's left behind women he loved (quite dearly and deeply) on the show for less because it was impractical and illogical to stay with them. His logic (especially while he's at such a young age and still so uncomfortable with embracing his emotional side) could easily be used to interfere with that relationship. It's difficult enough to maintain a relationship with a coworker. Hell, protocol alone (a relationship with a direct inferior officer doesn't seem like something the federation would allow) could push that apart. I think it's overly romantic to assume he would ignore the impracticalities of a working relationship to hold onto her for the sake of love at this point in his life.

[identity profile] thelenking.livejournal.com 2009-05-17 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
See I can agree that logic may interfere with them, especially with his desire to help repopulate his race. If it does it should be upsetting to watch, and make us realize that being Vulcan does kind of suck.

I'm just not partial to her hooking up with Kirk because the fans can't stand the idea of the female lead not hooking up with the male lead.

(Anonymous) 2009-05-17 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
It only sucks from an outsider perspective. A person who doesn't embrace our human social norms of emotion and relationships, like Spock, might not agree.

Frankly, I'd rather not have anyone hook up with anyone. I find romances to be more often than not cliched; stick to building an interesting/compelling plot and leave I can do all the subtexty stuff I want in my head.

[identity profile] thelenking.livejournal.com 2009-05-17 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
well there's a point that he's half human and will be conflicted over it. Sarek telling him that he loved his mother made him realize that Vulcan's can love, and that logic isn't the only thing that motivates them.

For a blockbuster film this was one of the least cliched relationships I've seen. I generally hate romance subplots because they're typically pointless and annoying. I could see this one being successful in future films because the character involved would be able to keep it business while on camera a majority of the time. It's subtly would allow your imagination to keep working on it.

(Anonymous) 2009-05-17 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
The Vulcans have always been creatures of high strung emotions. As Sarek said (and has been stated throughout the franchise) when they feel, they do so very deeply. But those emotions were destroying their race so they developed the Vulcan philosophy and devoted their lives to logic. Spock knew from a child (especially getting into fights) he was capable of emotion, he just refused it, like all Vulcans. He grew up in a society which did not place a social exception for dependency on relationships. While he might feel a tinge of sadness over losing a loved one, his greater purpose aboard the ship would take precedent. That doesn't mean being a Vulcan sucks, it means he (and his species) has/have different priorities.

I'd disagree but I've exhausted myself on the subject of Spock/Uhura and Zoe Saldana's acting.

[identity profile] thelenking.livejournal.com 2009-05-17 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the info, but I get what's up with the Vulcans, thanks to the fact that I like Star Trek.

The fact that the viewership of the films are NOT Vulcan, I can guarantee you that the creators would consider SOME way to show that being strictly logical in the face of emotion is not natural for us, and that we would likely believe it to suck. That's my point.

His mother dying obviously affected him, so it's fair to assume that he does suffer emotionally. Saying that losing a relationship he values wouldn't suck on some level for him as the same as saying that he shouldn't care if Kirk dies (and he always does) because attachment or concern for others is useless to his people.

(Anonymous) 2009-05-17 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
Excuse me for erring on the side of caution because not everyone in this thread is an expert on tos canon.

My point was that, while he might feel some pain over the situation (I don't, and have not denied that), he would feel satisfaction in doing what his species as socialized as "the right thing to do".

(Anonymous) 2009-05-17 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
*what his species has socialized

[identity profile] thelenking.livejournal.com 2009-05-17 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
I understand. Sorry if I came off as a douche when I addressed that.

I think he would try to do the "Vulcan" thing in most circumstances, but that doesn't mean that he's completely controlled by logic, or that it's always a guarantee how that will work with him. Especially not in this new timeline.

Take for instance the fact that he joined Starfleet over the Vulcan Science Academy (despite the fact that his father wished for him to do so to "honor" the Vulcan way). Being accepted should have been all the satisfaction he needed, but he rejected it after they insulted Amanda (we can assume that's at least one reason) and then left the planet.

I read it in an interview about a week ago. I wish to god I could find it for you!
cleverthylacine: A picture of Mara, the only female Klingon in TOS (k'haia Selkereina)

[personal profile] cleverthylacine 2009-05-17 07:13 am (UTC)(link)
THIS. Uhura is one of my favourite female characters evar, I met Nichelle Nichols when I was 13, she was totally fucking AWESOME and she never ever had to "do" anyone. There was some great chemistry between Hikaru and Nyota in TOS but the Kirk/Uhura kiss was non-consensual for both of them and the result of alien mind control.

Also, I love Zachary Quinto but he can't act for shit in heterosexual love scenes. Leslie Cheung he is not. He does almost ok snogging Kristen Bell because she's his BFF and they know each other but he looked ridic trying to make out with Uhura and I wish every person who makes those idiot comments of "how do you know he's gay, why do you not want him to be straight" could watch that makeout scene, because if the fact that he's always evasive and only publicists try to pair his name up with that of an actress ever isn't clue enough for you, that should totes fix it...it's not that we don't WANT him to be straight, it's that we're pretty sure he's NOT.

(Anonymous) 2009-05-17 10:10 am (UTC)(link)
I found this very offensive for Zachary Quinto. He is a great actor even in the het love scenes. Tell me that that kiss with Maya back in S2 wasn't hot as hell.
Also, he never ever talks about his own private life so why this bother people so much?

(Anonymous) 2009-05-17 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
That kiss with Maya back in S2 wasn't hot as hell. Sorry, it was almost as awkward as the kiss with Zoe in Star Trek or the make out with Kristen Bell. I love him, and I think he's brilliant and almost everything he does, with the exception of romantic scenes

(Anonymous) 2009-05-17 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Like. I literally laughed at the kiss with Maya. That's how awkward it seemed to me. I laughed out loud at it..

(Anonymous) 2009-05-17 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
No, it's really not ever hot when he kisses women. He's a really brilliant actor, but he's not convincing when it comes to heterosexual romances.

(Anonymous) 2009-05-17 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
He can play comedy and he can play drama really fantastically well. He's a brilliant actor in that respect. But I agree, he cannot for the life of him comfortably make out with a girl. Of course, I've known straight actors (Honestly straight. I've met/known them) who can't do so either. The fact that he can't make out with a girl on camera isn't proof of his sexuality.

However, combined with the rest of his life.. You'd have to be blind or in denial like one of those Lance Bass/Clay Aiken fans to not to realize he's straight.

(Anonymous) 2009-05-17 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
***TO NOT REALIZE HE'S GAY. wow I can't type today
