The moment a pairing sunk its hooks into you

Is there a specific moment when you started shipping a particular pairing? Tell me about your “Oh. Oh,” moments with regards to shipping.

Kylo and Hux's first argument in The Force Awakens. I instantly thought these two may hate each other, but Hux would also really, really like to dominate the hell out of Ren. And Ren would probably enjoy it.

I shipped ever since.

Root and Shaw - "I kind of enjoy this sort of thing." "I'm so glad you said that! I do, too!"

I never read or really "got" slash until I saw Captain Jack in Torchwood on a tumblr gif with Captain John.

I was like...OHHHHHH and had that OMG a ship I need feeling all at once. It was very cool.

I was into Galadriel/Frodo the moment Cate Blanchett stepped in front of Elijah Wood, know what I'm sayin'?

I watched Hannibal (TV) from the beginning, and knew people shipped Hannibal and Will, but I really just couldn't get into it myself. Then the entirety of 3x13 happened.

Hahaha, it really got you in the eleventh hour, hey? My moment for them was in 2x08, where Will almost shoots a guy and Hannibal stops him. The way it was staged was so intense, and weirdly intimate. That said, I never really high-key shipped them, I only low-key shipped them. A+ ship, though. Their dynamic is so fascinating.

With my OTP, it was definitely Hardin saying about Sydney (paraphrased), "Yeah, of course he lies. Everyone lies. Why single him out?" and then (long story short) the person reading his thoughts sees him think "He would not lie to ME." I was already kind of intrigued by some previous scenes between them, but that was where I went "...OH REALLY NOW."

The other ship I'm super into right now, it wasn't a moment in canon so much as a moment on a kink meme ten years past where someone suggested a thing that was just morbid enough to pique my interest and pick up the prompt even though it seemed like a crack ship. And somewhere in the middle of writing it, when one confesses to the other about having killed his father... the full potential of these two characters with their particular brands of very stark morality hit me like a ton of bricks, like really no, I think A is the ONLY person in canon that would actually try to help him and not just GTFO (or alternately, take advantage/blackmail him) if he finds out who B is.

My Starker moment was Peter dying in Tony’s arms on Titan, fighting it the whole time, and Tony trying to comfort him but being helpless to stop it. After the fact, I realized that shift from “This totally innocent mentor/mentee relationship is great!” to, “Oh shit, I ship it,” had been building since the beginning of Infinity War. I mean, Tony saying, “Pete, you gotta let go, I’m gonna catch you,” as Peter faints in the outer atmosphere because Tony told him to follow the wizard. That’s…yeah, that’s some good shit. Also, Peter accidentally sticking to the side of the ship because he didn’t want to leave Tony out there by himself? Yes, good. But it wasn’t until, “Mr. Stark, I don’t feel so good…” that it clicked.

I shipped Johnlock pretty much immediately, but if there was any doubt, then the exchange in the cab when John says, “That was amazing,” and Sherlock is like, “That’s not what people usually say,” definitely sealed the deal. Sadly, while almost the entire first episode was grade-A shipping fuel, it was all downhill from there. *sigh*

Back in the late 00's, some third tier channel was airing X-Files in syndication at like 1AM every night. I'd been catching the occasional episode but hadn't fallen into obsession yet. Then one night I got drunk with my friend and when we came back from the bar, X-Files was on and it was the S3 episode Pusher. It was such an intense episode, and I was so hammered, and Scully and Mulder were both so beautiful (especially Scully omg), and when it got to the climactic Russian Roulette scene I remember just being so completely gone on them in that moment I was losing my mind.

That's such a good episode! And I don't even ship them romantically but the whole Russian roulette scene is just unreal

First ship ever: Maria and Georg von Trapp. The two of them fighting while she stood there soaking wet from falling in the lake. Eight-year-old me was like, "Why does my stomach have the squiggles suddenly??" XD

Cas intensely staring at Dean and saying, “What’s the matter? You don’t think you deserve to be saved”, made me hop aboard the Destiel ship.

One day all the Phantom of the Opera fans I followed on tumblr were posting gifs of some bug eyed weirdo bowing with a rose in his hand to a pretty smiling girl in a blue dress and I went "oh is this a new Beauty and the Beast show or something? That sounds cool, maybe I'll check it out."

Then I saw a gif of Rumplestiltskin reacting to Belle's kiss with frenzied self loathing, and another when he wept when he thought she'd been tortured for loving him and killed herself, and my brain lit up like a fucking pinball machine.

What can I say, I have a type.

My other two OTPs are less easily traced to one or two key scenes highjacking my hindbrain. Maybe because my first exposure was in depth reading the source material and other info about them (and in the case of Christine/Erik, listening to the ALW London cast recording) and I only saw their respective shows later.

Stargate Atlantis - I was on the fence about McShep until that moment on the pier. Then every time Rodney called Sheppard 'John' just made me giddy.

Honestly though, most of my pairings I've been sold on through good fic writers.
