I wouldn't say you're doing it wrong. There's nothing wrong about writing for validation and to make friends.

The only thing is, like, why put so much pressure on yourself? Take the time you need to write what you want to write. I've gone literally a decade between updates (hi, I'm old) and I still had some of the same readers and reviewers come back around, absolutely ecstatic that I had updated.

Some people like WIPs. Some just read and hope. Some will absolutely leave. Some writers update weekly. Some once a month. Some whenever they can, which means sometimes they update a lot and then they don't update for a year. There's nothing wrong with any of it. The whole point is to enjoy it. So... don't worry about pleasing anyone but yourself. The people who like your stuff will find you and stick around.

Well... but I think that's one of the big reasons that people think that writing for attention and friendships is "doing fandom wrong", though. Not because it's morally wrong, but because it's extremely stressful, especially for people with things like abandonment issues or anxiety. Obviously if you're happy with it that's great though! But it's a very tricky way to approach fandom imo.

I’ve been having some similar struggles myself. I want to write my fic for its own sake, but I really want feedback and engagement and friendships from it too. That desire seems to get a lot of criticism online, like you should be so grateful that anyone even looks at it, which is discouraging.

I’ve also come to realize that I get almost all of my comments within 2 days of updating, even if the kudos, subscriptions, and bookmarks go up every day. That should motivate me to write more and update sooner but it isn’t working that way unfortunately.

Don't worry about it, OP. Update on YOUR schedule. You absolutely cannot please everyone. On my last story, I was set on a 2-week update schedule because it's what worked best for me. Some people thanked me for updating so frequently... whereas a friend told me it wasn't often enough for his liking so he was going to wait until I was done posting to read it. Some people just don't like WIPs in general, either cuz they don't like waiting for new chapters or they've been burned by authors abandoning their stories. *shrug*

Just accept that some people are going to abandon you no matter what, because that's what people do, for assorted reasons, and maybe that will make it easier? Some will disappear, but new readers will also come along. Write what you want and be proud of what you've done!

Unfortunately it's a double edged sword from my experience over the years. I don't read WIPs unless it's from an author I know and trust because I don't want to commit to reading something and then be left hanging. So your reasons for writing make someone like me even less convinced that a story may get finished because the reason for writing the fic are not primarily about wanting to write. It's not about doing it right or wrong it's just about understanding that everyone approaches fic differently. I don't read fic to make friends I look for an engaging story that will not leave me hanging when the author loses interest.

And ultimately you're at the mercy of the legacy of others who started fics for very similar reasons and then didn't see it through.

I think a lot writers seek to gain friends. I think the ways social media apps are set up they don't invite or encourage for a more relaxed and fun and engaging atmosphere for readers and writers to engage. We all sort of have to create them on our own.
I've come to believe that some writers just tend to get a lot more people to just gravitate towards them. It's a mix of a lot of things.

My only thing of advice outside of have fun is, don't see this as your own creative outlet, including making connections through it.
After a lot of years I've come to realize I'm not making connections because I'm painfully shy and I'm not great at fostering deeper connections. I can't keep writing until I write the perfect fic(s) to find people who get me and accept me.
It's still very much, go out and get to know people. Don't use your hobbies to draw people into you.
I'm still working on that.

I'm there with you, OP, except from the other direction-- I'm glad EU got turned into Legends and fossilized all my favorite characters, because by the end (was it Legacy of the Force? Fate of the Jedi?) I felt like they were being so misused that I hated to even think what fresh hell they were going to be put through next.

And given how Alphabet Squadron went, I'm glad none of my beloved Wraiths were anywhere near how the current EU seems to be doing pilots. I have my memories and dog-earred paperbacks, and that's enough.

If any of them were to be imported into new canon, I feel like it would be a monkey's paw situation that would only end in tears.

I'm the inverse of you OP where I love reading about characters being able to be open and accepted by their loved ones because that's not a reality for me, so I'm using fiction in that way to escape if you will. But your way is no less valid and not wrong: it's what speaks to you most and thus is what you should seek out.

And honestly sometimes I also want stories like you as well because the catharsis of it can weirdly feel good.
