Inspired by .4 - Genshin related

I was browsing through the fandom wiki, looking at official art of Kaeya, and thought it was cool that he got a poster or some-such featuring him and a gift on White Day (which is like a Japanese addition to Valentine's Day: girls express romantic interest in boys by giving them sweets on Feb 14th and then - if the attention is welcome - the boy gives them a return gift of sweets on March 14). Kaeya is not black, but he's noticeably dark skinned compared to a lot of the cast. And he is a shameless flirt, so the whole thing seemed ... apt. Then I get to the comments and see people assuming there is something horrendously racist about featuring a POC character on "White Day," and also 'why is Genshin even promoting such a thing??'

I really can't decide if this is trolling, or they sincerely assumed "White Day" must be something white supremacists came up with.

You never know if this is a troll or if someone in the Genshin fandom is clueless enough to really think this. But knowing the fandom, the latter is very likely. There are a LOT of really stupid people in that fandom. But also plenty of dumb trolls so... yeah.

You know, after looking at the comments (oh god it's even two different ones): nah, those are definitely just really dumb pearl clutchers.

Okay ... weird.

I think I have better things to do than try to explain White Day to people whose apparent first reaction was (clueless) judgement.

I don't think it's a troll. It's common every year for loads of people to see "Happy White Day" somewhere and assume it has something to do with white supremacy. I understand the kneejerk reaction (nobody who's not from East/some of Southeast Asia has any reason to know what White Day is unless they're a really huge weeb; even casual anime fans don't tend to know) but I would expect them to have the sense to Google and check it first before going off.

See, I consider myself a fairly casual manga fan, and it never occurred to me that White Day might be assumed to be about white people. And, in line with what you said, the commenters' search engine of choice is right there, two seconds of poking at the internet would have disabused them of the notion.
