Your run-of-the-mill Q-Nut probably is mentally ill, you don't fall that far into that kind of stuff if you're mentally and emotionally healthy and self-actualized.

(your non-run of the mill Q-Nut is often a cynical grifter, but most of the true believers really, really need psychiatric help.)

With all due respect, I don't believe that's true. That's a big leap between being happy/fulfilled and full-on mental illness. There are many miserable people that fall in between and become radicalized, but they are not incapable of understanding reality.

Oh they're not necessarily clinically delusional, but depression, disabling anxiety, OCD w/ scrupulosity, bipolar, etc. are also psych disorders and they have huge overlap with qanon types. (They also have huge overlap with fandom types too of course.)

Or you know, they could just be bitter and resentful...

NAYRT

As on of the resident mental ill people of F!S I agree with this.
I've suffered from delusions and until you've dealt with that you can't really get it, imho. Mine are harmless to others but I become super paranoic and I'm convinced that everyone wants to kill me and that cellphones and cellular towers suck away your thoughts and mental energy.
Crazy, right? Lol

My aunt was schizophrenic and she believed some really really crazy stuff, like QAnon stuff. Like the government poisoning the water to control you, the snow being a man-made product with chemicals that if it came to contact with your skin it'd change your DNA and vaccines changing your psychic abilities etc etc.
This was before the internet. And she lived a very reclused life. So yeah, all the "crazy" ideas were hers.
She was one of the best people I've ever know on my life. Very intelligent and bright, very soft spoken, generous and calm, but damn she was very very sick.

My mom is mostly sane all the time, but when she's having a bad day she becomes very aggressive and spout some very dangerous antisemitic bullshit. When you confront her about that when she is properly medicated and well she doesn't harbor any ill intent or any particular thoughts about Jewish people. It's very bizzarre.

My older sister is a convinced anti-vaxxer, but I'm almost sure she's NOT mentally ill. I think she was just radicalised by people manipulating her legitimate fears.

So yeah, The line between sanity and illness is a very fine line. I'm convinced anybody can cross it at any time and they'd be none the wiser and sometimes be undetected by others.
And insanity can really transform you into a conspiracy nut.

Also, if we want to add another layer to the discussion, there can be mass psychosis and delusions. People can suffer from widespread "insanity symptoms" in groups. It has been documented more that once.
I do think that is a big part of what is happening with the QAnons et all. Grifters manipulating people with psychological weaknesses or illnesses for their monetary or political gains or just for the internet lulz.

But I'm not an expert in psychiatry so IDK MAN. THE WORLD IS COMPLICATED YO
