Anybody journal/keep a diary?

(Anonymous) 2023-02-04 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Just curious. I just started a new one after finishing my old one. I've been keeping a diary for the past 16 years so far (although I don't write every day - more like every few days or every few weeks).

I have a couple different online journals. This month I'll be updating them both at least on the weekends. One's a hodgepodge (but mostly cerebral stuff), while the other is for fictional freewrites.

Yo, I journal! I have a weakness for buying beautiful journals so I figure I should probably use up the ones I have. I do write an entry everyday even if the main entry is only a single sentence because I don't have a lot of words sometimes. The main draw of doing daily entries to me is using it as a to-do list.

I have three, though I haven't started my field journal for nature sketches. I keep a daily journal where I track food and feelings (chronic illness, NOT diet culture-- I both need to know IF I ate enough on brain fog days, and need to know if I develop new trigger foods), water intake, I tick off when I take my meds, and then I also just... write about my day and what I watched on TV that night or how my games with friends go.

And then also a dedicated reading journal, which I'm switching up a little this year.

I used to when I was a teenager, but I haven't done it regularly in years. I half heartedly tried to again during the early days of the pandemic, but it didn't last too long before I forgot about it lol.

I try! But end up just making very few entries a year. I do try to at least log in one or two interesting dreams I may have.

I used to journal in my youth but my older sister was an intrusive bully that I never felt safe enough to truly commit to writing my thoughts down whenever I would try.

I've fleetingly given it a half hearted attempt through the years, and lately I've been wanting to but I don't know how to journal?

Like, legit, do you just...write whatever you want? Because as a write I overthink so I always assume I have to have a theme to my entry. And I often just have the same old boring stories to tell since I'm a full grown adult now? Like, how do you journal? Do you really just write? Am I overthinking it?

Not OP

I can see where you might feel like you're overthinking it, as there's no one way to really journal. Some people are comfortable diving right into journaling without any guidance or themes, while others may opt to start with prompts or by using a guided journal sold online/in stores. Over time, it can be easier to figure out what to write and even decide to go against your usual approach.

And hey, sometimes writing about the same event multiple times might be useful practice. It can help you find a particularly good memory to preserve or shed light on a situation that may be affecting you in ways you hadn't previously considered. I know I revisit certain moments in my journal(s) on multiple occasions. While it's debatable how much actually changes each time I write about it, I still find it useful (especially for tough things like grieving a death or dealing with the lingering vicarious trauma of surviving citywide arson/vandalism).

Honestly yeah I do write whatever I want - I guess because I tend to use it for multiple reasons (although of course themed journals are a thing - I also have another journal that just lists what books I read in what year, even if I only read two books in that entire year).

For my personal journal I just write whatever I did on certain days to keep track of when I did it, even if its mundane like: bullet points of what I did that day, when I got ill, when I met up with a friend, when the weather changes/gets unusual, events that's been reported on the news, finding something at a second hand shop, birthdays, etc...
Then there's writing down what I'm feeling on certain days from low moods to what happened to trigger a mood swing.
Sometimes I dedicate a page to what songs I liked throughout the month as another bullet point list. I've even tried drawing things/people/food/etc that I had seen that day with a note written under it.

I think it helps that I don't buy one of those literal journals with the dates already printed in it, so I don't feel pressured to write everyday or feel bad when I do forget to write in it. I just get a blank notebook so I can write the date in myself and write whatever - even if I make mistakes and scribble it out (there's definitely pages where I either wrote it half-asleep or drunk so its messy or just about legible lol). My older journals have had monthly gaps in between writing in them, but I've gotten into the habit of writing in them more frequently in recent years - mostly because I don't really have anyone to talk to so its a small comfort thing for myself in a way.

Yo, I'm a person from upthread! You could literally just put whatever you want in the journal. I mentioned that I use mine as a combo to-do list plus daily journal entry, which lets me keep track of tasks I have to do as well as just having something nice to write my daily thoughts in. For the daily thoughts, you don't even have to write much at all. There are many famous writers who had journal entries that were just along the lines of "this day sucked and I hated every moment of it." Or perhaps the more telling journal entry where one of the US presidents (I can't remember his name), who when his wife died, wrote only an X for that day.

You can literally write whatever you want! Want to draw doodles for a fanfic you're writing? Go ahead. Want to write down whatever random memory you happened to remember at the moment? Go ahead. Want to write down phone numbers you need to call back? Go ahead. Want to use pretty stickers and washi tape to hold some sentimental ticket stub onto your journal page like a scrapbook? Etc., etc.

Additionally sometimes for me, it's nice to have somewhere to vent my thoughts so that way I don't immediately do something rash, and can get a better perspective on things. Sometimes venting comes in the form of a doodle as well.

Whatever it is, a journal gives me a way to instantly remember what I was doing that day as if it were yesterday, so maybe I'm biased towards journaling. Either way, you can enjoy putting your thoughts into a book however you like.

I saw that the first comment above mentioned using prompts and just wanted to say that when I get stuck on what to write, I've searched online for prompts and seen lists screenshot in the images.
Some prompts for example:
-What does the color red make you think of?
-A recipe you would like to try
-What is your most proud moment?
-five things that made you laugh
-If you could write a message to your younger self, what would you say?
-I am anxious/sad when...
-what was the best & worst movies you have seen?
-one good thing about your day
-write a letter to your future self
-What would you do if money was no object?

Use the paperblanks app. They have a ton of prompts

I retain very little long term memory, so I do write about mundane stuff that I would want to remember.
