I haven't watched either one because they sound like they're mainly romances, and I don't really care for romantic cdramas.

*hand waggle*

They've both got solid B-plots and action/political background. (Admittedly, The Long Ballad stumbles on the details in a few places - perils of adapting a v. long source story.)

In both of them, the heroine's relationships with family-members and friends are *at least* as important as their romantic interests. Both depict multiple ways a woman can prosper and be happy. And sometimes, how a woman can be sad.

Changge's romance arc in The Long Ballad ends with her

[SPOILER]

explicitly rejecting marriage with the guy she cares about and saying she just wants to wander the world with him as free agents and he is up for that. (I'm not sure they even kiss?)

So... yes, they have romance plots, but there's a lot to enjoy if romance isn't your thing.

That sounds more promising, thank you!

You're welcome.

Oh, and you might wanna give Stand By Me|Dream of Chang'an a go.

It does have a M/F romance arc, but the 1st FL's relationship with the 2nd FL was the big draw for me. (Xuan Lu is rather wonderful as a coolly calculating mastermind.)
