Engage is pretty different from Three Houses-- it definitely has things I like, but if Three Houses was the high point in the series for you, Engage might be a disappointment, yeah, depending on what about the last one you liked the most.

The engage mechanic is fun, and combat is otherwise just the same as any title. Some of the characters I really like, others are definitely duds for me. The fishing is NOT as fun as in Three Houses, I didn't enjoy it, but I like being able to actually adopt cats and interact with them more, where in Three Houses all I could do was stand near them-- I mean, there are lots of animals you can adopt, but the cats catch fish for you, which saves me dealing with the fishing mechanic. You still get to have special meals with any two companions at your base, the costume changes everyone gets to have in base are fun and Sommie is ADORABLE. But, it's not the best writing the series has had, and while a lot of character designs grow on one, not all of them do.

However, you get to be GAY, and as a guy, getting to have as many options as anyone is kind of a big deal. In Three Houses, there were a few f/f romance options and ONE m/m, Birthright/Conquest had one each, and both those times, the m/m romance was the WORST guy. If you don't care about the romance side, then it hardly matters, but getting to have ANY of the romanceable characters not be gender-locked is huge for FE. It's the only time since Ike that your hero could wind up with a guy I didn't hate.
