It's very interesting how fandom plays the same tune but different instruments in some fandom places. like "why can't people be friends" being said about shipping I've only ever seen when there's rival ships at play.

It's true that it often shows up when there's a rival ship involved, but homophobic fans also use it a lot about gay content, particularly m/m, in my experience.
