Honestly, in the same situation, as a teen, I'd simply have guessed that the whole thing was made up for internet sympathy, roll my eyes, and simply quit reading / wait until (if ever) the fic was completed. Lots of fic writers would post increasingly heart-string pulling things when fic popularity was flagging to drum up sympathy and attention. It also tended to make their die hard fans come down hard on any criticism. For a while I took posts like that from authors with the same massive grain of salt a professor in mid exam season takes "my grandmother died". [but would never post about my doubts because yeah, on the off-chance any of it were TRUE I didn't want to sound like a massive asshole]
