I can relate. I often enough get set in my opinion or ship after going through tags. Including going for rare ships. *sighs*

I know your pain! Well, actually, I do sometimes get into ships through canon material - but those ships almost never have any fic written about them. Nearly any time I get into a ship that has an actual fandom behind it, it's because I started reading fic about a character I liked, and then found a lot of fic for a ship with them in it that I end up liking.

And then the pain of finding a really amazing rarepair with, like, 2 fics written about it, ever... extremely real.

This happened to me in one fandom (Psych with Shawn/Gus). I solved the problem by forcing myself to get into the juggernaut (Shawn/Lassiter). Apparently my need for fic trumps my shipping preferences, lol.

Ahh, Shawn/Gus, my beloved. Though I also didn't mind Shaen/Lassiter either. My main complaint with Psych fic was how much of it was oldschool hurt/comfort with very little comfort and not enough jokes. It's Psych! Where's the humor?

Interestly, once I got into Shassie I liked Shawn/Gus less - I started feeling like they needed to be with different people to grow as people (especially Gus).

Not that Lassie is that person for Shawn particularly - I just brute forced the 'enemies to lovers' switch on in my brain for them, lol

I get into ships from canon material, but it is frequently either canon material that only inspires small fandoms or rare pairs. It's kind of magical.

I have some serious rare pairs-- like, ships ONE other person has wrote, ships I am 90% responsible for the content for.

I always thought of Kakashi/Gai as a popular one, but maybe that's more for art than for fic?

Kakagai is relatively rare for fic, since most ppl like either Kakashi/obito or Kakashi/Iruka.

Not to say there isn't fic for it, but all the plotty ones that are over 5/10k are almost nonexistent lol

But yeah op I feel you, crack ships/rare pairs are so fun to get into but also depressing

I relate OP, I love finding random rare/crackpair fics that are surprisingly well done.

Semi related: Most of my ships comes from me messing around with characters while consuming the Canon, just to later have to deal with the fact that my tastes are apparently weird and I'm alone, and this leaves me much the same way as rarepair fics do, only that instead of only one fic, I have zero.

Funnily enough I would argue Scott and Stiles give you plenty in canon to lean them that way - if only via Stiles' possessiveness of/surrounding Scott ALONE - but strangely all that chemistry has with Scott and all the chemistry Derek canonically had with Scott went to his friend instead. Just like Liam getting all of Mason's canon chemistry with boys and Danny getting sidelined for Jackson. How.....strange, wonder if that's related at all? 🤔

Sometimes I get into ships via fics, though I usually only stick with the ship if I ship it in canon. Like, I first got into Sauron/Celebrimbor through reading a fic on a kinkmeme. That fic was so good I ended up reading the Silmarillion and actual canon only made me ship harder.

I don't consider Sastiel and Faith/Buffy a rarepair (I have always found plenty of fic for both of them), but they're definitely not the juggernaut so i feel you there.

Oh lol, same, OP, same. I absolutely love that moment of "holy SHIT these people work????", but then the crash when I look at the paltry handful of fic, most of which is nowhere as good as the one that got me into the ship...

Alternately, I read a fic about a side character that makes me go "holy SHIT this person is actually a blorbo?????????", and then end up with several rareships with that one character. Cue the same result as above. Sadness.

Well, at least I have something to write about...
