TBH I didn't know ballet was murder on your feet until I saw a documentary about ballerinas. At first I was surprised, but then I thought, "Of course it would do that to your feet."

I took it for a few years as a kid and even just kids ballet does not feel nice on your feet. My sister kept going and got into point, and it really was painful for her. I can't imagine how painful professional ballet is.

NAYRT

I was a ballet kid too when I was younger, and the foot pain was 100% the reason I got out of it. I love ballet, but I just couldn't keep putting myself through that. I guess I didn't love it quite enough :/

Honestly I never wanted to do it. I mostly did it because my sister did it and my parents convinced me to try. I only managed 3 years.

I can't imagine sticking with something I didn't really want to do for 3 years. I tried out for soccer(football for the rest of the world.) when I was 6 or 7 because my brother loved it, and I didn't even last 15 minutes before I was asking Mom if she could get her money back.

I remember my poor dad asked once if I wanted to try ballet, because I had been in a kids dance class. I immediately rattled off all of the horrible things about ballerinas' feet that I had recently learned in a book, because I thought it was interesting, and he promptly ended the conversation and never asked again.

One of the Geraldine McEwan Miss Marple programs included a victim who was identified as a missing ballet dancer by the condition of her feet. I thought that was a nifty detail.

Okay, so was the person describing everyone's feet nicely or just that one dancer?

because yes, all of my friends' feet were fucked. but i danced for 13 years, 6 en point and mine were fucking beautiful. the only time i lost a toenail wasn't even from ballet (ballet uh... made the toenail come off quicker tho. and I'm just remembering that I danced on that toenail-less toe WHY). they didn't smell and they didn't hurt (much) (they went very numb? like my nerve endings shut off? and they would get progressively numb to the point of uncomfortableness. it wasn't what I would call pain though, until I'd been off point for a couple hours and had to go back on), they never bled, some people are just lucky. yes I am bragging. this secret brought me right back the headspace where this was a brag.

but ALSO! get the right pointe shoe. i cannot say this enough. your teachers will guide to their favorite. fuck that. it's a like a bra, you need to get fitted. those damn things cost way to much to NOT be cinderella's slipper. i went through three brands before I found the ones, but i could dance for fucking days on those. i felt like I'd found a non-evil version of the red shoes.

Your feet sound *awesome*, nonnie - brag away! (And your advice about getting proper pointe shoes is v. good.)

I somehow ended up watching a YouTube channel about a woman who fits ballet shoes, and to my surprise at least one of the dancers she fitted had really pretty feet!

*Cries in Quasimodo looking feet, and I don't even do ballet*

Worth bragging about though lol

I have total respect for the dedication and passion and physical work it takes to be a dancer, and a ballet dancer.

But frankly, that level of constant injury and pain is pretty fucking gross. I know that a lot of pro and amateur athletes/dancers/etc. have pain, wear bruises, all that. But to me, NONE of it is worth competing or performing in pain, with torn muscles or ligaments, missing nails, cracked bones, any of it.

I mean there's a reason every ballerina has their own special recipe for smashing up and resewing new slippers and then exactly how they wrap each individual toe, with which particular material, and where they place padding. I bet you could identify a Jane Doe Ballerina by her ballet slipper arrangement.

This reminds me of a subplot in the show You're The Worst. Jimmy has a foot fetish and he's seeing this woman who's an Olympic skiier. She produces her foot at him and its all bruised and beaten and he's disgusted. She's not ashamed or anything but their relationship doesn't last.
