(Anonymous) 2023-02-12 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)I was a ballet kid too when I was younger, and the foot pain was 100% the reason I got out of it. I love ballet, but I just couldn't keep putting myself through that. I guess I didn't love it quite enough :/

because yes, all of my friends' feet were fucked. but i danced for 13 years, 6 en point and mine were fucking beautiful. the only time i lost a toenail wasn't even from ballet (ballet uh... made the toenail come off quicker tho. and I'm just remembering that I danced on that toenail-less toe WHY). they didn't smell and they didn't hurt (much) (they went very numb? like my nerve endings shut off? and they would get progressively numb to the point of uncomfortableness. it wasn't what I would call pain though, until I'd been off point for a couple hours and had to go back on), they never bled, some people are just lucky. yes I am bragging. this secret brought me right back the headspace where this was a brag.
but ALSO! get the right pointe shoe. i cannot say this enough. your teachers will guide to their favorite. fuck that. it's a like a bra, you need to get fitted. those damn things cost way to much to NOT be cinderella's slipper. i went through three brands before I found the ones, but i could dance for fucking days on those. i felt like I'd found a non-evil version of the red shoes.

But frankly, that level of constant injury and pain is pretty fucking gross. I know that a lot of pro and amateur athletes/dancers/etc. have pain, wear bruises, all that. But to me, NONE of it is worth competing or performing in pain, with torn muscles or ligaments, missing nails, cracked bones, any of it.
