One of my friends got into the fandom of a really popular tv series and it's weird how intense it can get based off of what they've told me about the fandom. I sometimes I wonder if people join fandoms to filter their negativity towards something. Because it sounds like my friend and their fandom will always find something to be angry about. If it's not the show runners fucking up, it's the actors, if it's not the actors it's the anti/pro shippers/shippers hating each other. And it's like, wow, why do people hate what they like so much?

I don't know if it's the difference in culture (I've been consuming mostly asian media since 2019) or a change in fan culture (or both), but holy shit there's so much entitlement. So-called fans seem to have the idea that if they're a fan of someone then that person has to do EXACTLY what the "fan" likes all the time. Or if the actor is recorded doing something the "fan" doesn't like, such as wearing a specific color to run an errand, then the actor has been lying to everyone and is a horrible person. Or, more recently in my fandom, their production company is abusing them!11!eleventy.

Like, what? Just. what????? Go outside and touch some goddamned grass. Maybe smoke some, too, cause y'all need to calm the fuck down.

For me, I don't mind characters with that dynamic *ending up* in a cutesy UWU lovefest. But writers need to show the work of getting us there! That's a huge change in dynamic and it's something that needs to appear on the page. Ideally, described in chapters and chapters and chapters of long and minutely-described falling in love without quite realizing they no longer hate each other.

Honestly if I get into a ship like this it's fucking infuriating because almost none of the fic will actually be their canon dynamic, which is what I like and am there for, and instead it's nothing but this bizzarely OOC slush that no one is acknowledging is OOC. It's so weird.

Yup. People can do what they want. But personally when I ship enemies it is because of their canon dynamic. I don't want to read a completely different dynamic that is these characters in name only.

While I do want my ship to fall complicatedly in love eventually, I totally agree with you about the kind of fics you're referring to.

I feel like most of the time it's kind of a less overt self-insert type thing, where the writer and readers are usually heavily identified with the uwu soft character who gets comforted and/or taken care of and/or gets their world rocked by the other character, who is hot.

IDK, I'm not saying that's what it is for everyone. It just seems like maybe that's the main appeal for some people. And obviously I could psychologize my own interests in the same way (and I DO, all the fucking time), so I don't mean this in some kind of, "Those people's psyches are weird but not mine, I only like cool shit for cool reasons because I'm a cool person who would never use fiction as an emotional outlet" kind of way.

I'm fine when it's not set in canon. fine, whatever lol. but when its got canon history, and canon background, I spend the entirety of the fic confused which is the 2nd worst fanfic emotion for me.

My feelings about the military irl are complicated.

My feelings about the military in fiction are decidedly uncomplicated- that is to say I find military men and uniforms hot and enjoy reading about them getting it on.
