This. I think you can sell almost any pairing and dynamic with good enough writing/plotting and a credible character arc. But very, very few writers have the skill to do this, and most won't even attempt it. Replacing one character with thinly disguised OC who's got a completely different personality in order to make the romance "work" is way easier, and a lot of readers won't care about cheap shortcuts.
