FS has gotten super judgey lately, sometimes it seems like people are in a rush to post the first snide or withering putdown on a thread. I wish this phase would end, soon.

On the one hand, I really like and enjoy a lot of older tie-in novels and have a ton of nostalgia for them and will absolutely go back and read them.

On the other hand, it has to be acknowledged that the quality of a lot of those books was not high. That's not judgmental or pissy IMO, it's just a reality. Also IIRC the secret talked about tie-in novels representing a golden age of SFF or something like that which I think is a little strong.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-12 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't remember the secret, but a bunch of the early Star Trek (TOS) tie-ins were actually really, really good. There was a very light editorial hand and many of the writers were fic writers who were also professional SFF writers (Barbara Hambly, Vonda N. McIntyre, Diane Duane, Jean Lorrah).

True! And the same is true of the early Star Wars novels imo, with some of the same authors. And there's also some good Doctor Who novels from the time after it was canceled. But most tie-in novels still were pretty bad.

You don't get to decide what other people consider fun or good or not, though.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-13 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know what you want me to do with that information

(Anonymous) 2023-02-13 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Take it to heart?

(Anonymous) 2023-02-13 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
How so? How else should I talk about books that I think are bad?

(Anonymous) 2023-02-13 09:35 am (UTC)(link)
By not talking about them. You don't have to weigh in on every conversation, especially if all you have to say is something negative.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-13 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
You don't get to decide what other people consider fun or good or not, though.

But neither do you. So you're either being hypocritical with this, or your objection is merely that AYRT didn't qualify their opinion with "IMO." In which case, yeah, okay, "IMO's" are like seasoning your food--generally a good idea. But it's also not that hard to give AYRT the benefit of the doubt that the "IMO" is implied.

SA

Also, I see now that they actually did use "IMO," they just didn't use it on each statement they made individually. Which makes the whole "just give them the benefit of the doubt ffs" thing even more relevant. IMO.

Ah, thank you for highlighting the paradox of intolerance. You want me to stop being intolerant of others intolerance, and it doesn't really work like that. You just want free range to talk trash and not have pushback, and fuck that.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-13 03:26 pm (UTC)(link)
People are allowed to talk about things they don't like. Stop getting your panties in a bunch over it.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-13 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, look who’s comparing someone not liking the same media as them to real life bigotry! Who’s a naughty troll? You are!

(Anonymous) 2023-02-13 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Things can be objectively bad and you can still find them fun. There are plenty of books that I know are garbage but that I enjoyed anyway.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-12 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
This. I've read some tie-in novels that were actually quite good! ... but I've read a lot more that were honestly so bad it made me wonder how the studio was okay with releasing them with the franchise's name on them.

Some of them really and truly are just bad.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-12 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
as one of the anons who definitely said something about shitty tie-in novels, that's exactly what I was implying. they are not good. a large number of them are and were not good. and that's fine if you have the tastes for it, but I'm just really not that person. and I've tried. oh, I've tried. Ttrek novels are middling-to-terrible, sorry I don't like Barbra Hambley's writing at all, and someone please throw Shatner out of the publishing boardroom. I don't have the stomach for middling-to-terrible. If OP feels judged, well, honestly I'm not judging, but I suppose questioning your level of taste can feel rough sometimes. I have questioned my taste and admit it's uncomfortable, until you get past it and stop giving a fuck. my musical taste is shit, OP, you would actively shit on the terrible crap I listen to. and that's okay.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-13 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
If you don't like Hambly's writing, I'm honestly judging *you* right now. Hope that helps.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-13 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
As an aside, I found a stash of Man From U.N.C.L.E tie-in novels at an op-shop once and they were so much fun? Short, colourful, nice settings, lots of action... a nice line and I'm glad I picked them up.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-13 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
That's super cool! I'd love to read those - IIRC a bunch of them were written by Buck Coulson which is cool.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-13 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
I kind of never cared if the tie in novels were shitty or not. Before the Internet and widely available fanfic, they were my most reliable source of additional content for my fandoms. So I still have fond feelings for them

(Anonymous) 2023-02-13 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
What the heck is wrong with tie-ins? I *adored* the Star Trek ones as a kid and I remember really wishing they made a Star Wars movie out of Splinter of the Mind's Eye.

Lately I've been getting into the Stargate ones.

I love tie-in novels! I’m glad I missed that secret. One of my favourite novels of all time is a Buffy tie-in called The Lost Slayer. Time travel, vamp!Giles, parallel universe, and everyone was surprisingly in character (the author wrote loads of tie-ins for many fandoms and was usually rather shit tbh).

(Anonymous) 2023-02-13 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh my god, The Lost Slayer, YES! Whenever the subject of tie-in novels comes up, I always think of this novel and how I remember it being really good. I almost mentioned it ITT yesterday. However, I was fifteen when I read it and I haven't read it since, so I'm not super confident that it was actually as good as I remember, lol. However, I am super happy to know that someone else here remembers it as being really good!

I also remember feeling like the Spike and Dru tie-in Pretty Maids All In A Row didn't suck, but I definitely wasn't obsessed with it the way I was obsessed with The Lost Slayer for a while.

And I now see from looking at the Wiki that there is a Faith pre-S3 tie-in called Go Ask Malice, which is just...jesus fuck, I am laughing with my face in my hands over that title.
