i completely understand why this irritates. it's irritating in real life. the urge to go "why can't you just" is real. but the fact of the matter is that a lot of people can't just. they simply aren't thinking of life from the same perspective, they don't have the same tools, they don't have the same capacity. for some people this is true throughout their life and they are going to fuck up their adult life too until they can find another adult who can help them manage

also it seems like you gave up on adults being useful. part of holden's angst is that he hasn't actually given that up. there's a very large part of him that wants to trust people, AND doesn't want to get hurt and so he makes decisions on whichever part is higher priority at the moment.
