I hate it too. I'm currently seeing it in Good Omens fandom with Aziraphale's name.

"Zira(h)" is especially bad because a lot of the longtime fans have read or are at least aware of The Sacred and the Profane. It’s not anyone's fault if they don’t know the connotation, but it's there regardless.

what IS the connotation? googling 'sacred and the profane' just gave me a lot of religious books but I don't know what 'Zira(h)' refers to in that context? I have been seeing 'Zira' since I first read the book in 1995 and found fic on an obscure Web site.

AYRT

It's a Good Omens fic from the early 2000's, a roleswap AU where Aziraphale was the one who fell. This demon version of him is called Zirah. The fic itself is actually quite good, but suffice it to say that Zirah is not a fluffy character.

I don’t know what percentage of the fandom has read it, but as far as I can tell, it is pretty well known. At least, I've seen others express feeling a certain dissonance seeing Zira/Zirah used as a cute nickname for Aziraphale specifically because of that fic.

Oof I somehow managed to forget about 'zira'... or, even worse, 'Azi'. Neither sounds like something Aziraphale would EVER consent to be called, and I can't imagine Crowley seriously giving him a nickname like that! Crowley, more than anyone, understands the importance of a name.

NAYRT, and I just can't picture Crowley giving Aziraphale any "shortened form of his actual name" nicknames to him seriously. That said, I can absolutely imagine him calling him "Ezra" ironically.
