I don't play games so I'm not buying this anyway, but I don't see why people feel the need to advertise they're playing it if they can't restrain themselves.

I suppose the first issue came up with people reviewing the game, but that's kind of their job and they might have been assigned to do so.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-17 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I think they genuinely don't see the problem with advertising they're playing it, because totally boycotting anything Harry Potter-related is an extremely fringe position in the general population at large.

If it's someone IRL or on, I dunno, Facebook, then sure. But if they're in fandom, they know about it.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-18 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
Uh? Not necessarily? I work at a public library, and while we haven't removed her books from the general collection, or stopped buying them (as a public library, we buy right-wing drivel by chump and co so not buying JKR's stuff is not even on our radar, censorship isn't our thing) we don't really do HP themed kids' events or actively promote her work anymore, but we do "mermaid" (drag queen) storytime for Pride and stuff.

Because actively promoting HP/JKR at this point is seen as tone deaf at best and a terf/transphobe dogwhistle at worst, and we're not gonna alienate our trans patrons and staff just to promo middle of the road middle grade fantasy that came out 20+ years ago.

Yeeeeesh.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-18 09:34 am (UTC)(link)
Wasn't this whole mermaid thing repeatedly under fire for hosting/hiring pesos and sex offenders? Not sure I'd be too proud of that, really.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-18 01:52 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT yes, every single Pride-related story house across the country is linked to the hiring of sex offenders /s.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-18 02:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I confused this with this sketchy Mermaid foundation tbh.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-18 05:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you're trying to slander people and it's disgusting

(Anonymous) 2023-02-18 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I think you've probably also heard reports of the organisers or participants of these DQSH events turning out to be pedos who weren't vetted sufficiently because they were members of the new sacred priest class, or besties with pedos who have been convicted of crimes against children.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-18 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I would hate to fill you in on the potential risks of sending your kid to a school, given all the stories about (straight, cis) pedo teachers in the world.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-18 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT--no? It's just called mermaid storytime for the flashy makeup and outfits and stuff, the performers aren't part of an organization.

They're just people who dress up and tell stories to kids in a big room full of kids and adults. They're not holding kids on their laps, unlike, say, an old cis straight coworker who moonlights as a professional Santa.

I think maybe you're thinking of a UK charity and I'd never heard any of those allegations about its membership, either, but then I'm in the US and all I ever knew was the name and that they were/are a trans advocacy org.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-19 08:45 am (UTC)(link)
DA

No, the thing with the Mermaids charity had to do with one of the heads of the organization resigning after it turned out that he'd gone to a talk that had something to do with pedophilia as a distinct sexual orientation. But I don't think that's the people reading kids books and interacting with the public.

The part I found interesting was that you had a trans organization being investigated after they tried to get an organization supporting homosexuals defunded by the British government - the LGB Alliance. These groups disagree openly with each other, but this is the first time I'd seen one NGO going for the throat like that with another.

AYRT - I think there's a gulf between "recognizing that JKR's views are wrong and that Harry Potter is an increasingly awkward franchise to have total full-bore public fandom towards" and "total boycott of all official Harry Potter material"

(Anonymous) 2023-02-18 10:55 am (UTC)(link)
They probably don't. I'm curious when fandom is going to admit (tacitly or not) that the calls for this boycott flopped. HL has been topping the charts since pre-release.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-18 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
People already knew from the start that there wouldn't be a sucessfull boycot. It's Harry Potter.
But trans people (NOT *ALL* OBVIOUSLY, but many in the online space) are obviously hurt by self proclaimed trans allies that are promoting and buying the game or that bigotted right wingers are using the success of the sales to say that people don't care about them.

...it's not that difficult to understand.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-19 08:59 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT

I don't think most of the people being hassled online for buying this game ever expected "don't buy certain fiction books and video games" to be part of the package, even if they did consider themselves trans allies. And quite a few others just made no promises to begin with. They're not doing any of this to spite trans people (unlike the bigots), they just think civility entails things like memorizing someone's new name and their pronouns.
