DA but thank you! I'm far from ready to publish but I'm always interested in the options that aren't Amazon. I don't want my work there, good or bad, public or private.

SA

Here is the thing, there is no such thing as really "private" POD publishing on Amazon. There's no little checkbox for "I'm doing this for myself." In order to get that cute little author's copy (and any proofs for your cover) you have to push that publish button, choose a price, enter tax info etc.

I'm not sure about Lulu as a space as I haven't used it, but the books I've seen that have used it, have very good bindings and I fairly certain of the 'I'm doing this for friends/family/private' option. They started out for like wedding albums and stuff. So, while they've expanded I think into the POD/vanity publishing, their origins are different than Amazon KDP. (And sometimes, that makes all the difference.)

Yeah, I don't really care about mass distribution (lol I've given up on the idea tbh) or anything, but I do feel really strongly about whose "hands" touch the book, if that makes sense, and I think something like POD is exactly what I want (and I can dream my little writer dreams of a dozen people finding copies in the wild that change their lives in quiet little ways <3). I know there are a lot of options with those, though, so I'm still studying which site works best for me!
