Re: Weekend Plans!
However, a lot of friends of mine play it and they've assured me that if you do let your subscription lapse, you can pick it back up again later without losing anything - with very very few exceptions. The only notable one I can think of is that if you buy a house, and then don't access it for 45 days (which you can't, if your subscription is lapsed), it's bulldozed and someone else can buy your housing plot. (But you still keep all the stuff you had in the house - next time you log in, you can pick it up from a salvager NPC. So you don't actually LOSE anything but the housing plot.) So the advice there is, don't shell out the insane amounts for a housing plot - just get a much cheaper apartment for 500k. If you want to garden (which was the main reason I wanted a house), you can apparently still grow stuff in flowerpots.
A couple of my friends have just resubscribed for the latest expansion (and one of them to try to get tickets to the FanFest, lol) and then they intend to let it lapse once they're done, until the next expansion comes out. One guy has a character he hasn't played on since 2014 but it's still there.
So once I reach the end of Heavensward, I'll probably hang out for a bit with my free trial until there's another ridiculous deal on the whole package "up to that point" like there was at Christmas. I was going to buy it then, but one of those friends was like "no seriously, don't pay for anything until you've run out of free stuff! You get a lot of content for free already!" and so far that's worked except for being locked out of housing (gil cap is too low to pay for an apartment) and being annoyed by inventory limits. The inventory limits are REALLY annoying me though, as is the lack of housing, so I may break down and buy the full version sooner.
But yeah. Majority of my life has been spent well below the poverty line and although I'm fairly secure at the moment, I still have issues about spending money on anything other than 1) physical products that I can be sure won't disappear into a dead server or have access revoked, or 2) necessities. When it's a digital, non-essential product which can and WILL have access revoked if I fall on hard times again, it's nearly impossible for me to justify. I wish they'd just release a stand-alone version of the base game without multiplayer.
