In large cities you absolutely could build a public transport system where public transport is preferably to cars. I've lived in cities like that.

And it's also possible to offer inter-city travel like that. But it requires planning and effort and more buy-in than most municipal and state governments seem to be willing to give.

Thread OP

I live in one such city right now. Before the pandemic and we switched to WFH permanently, I took the bus to work. Bus runs every 15 minutes, and the transit system has a tracker so you can see where the bus is in real time. 25 minute commute there where I could read or watch tv, compared to 15 by car (or 45 by car if the bridge was up). With an annual pass, it cost $0.60 cents per trip if I only took the bus to and from work, compared to $15 a day just for parking. Doesn't even get into the car itself, maintenance, gas, insurance, etc etc. My wife worked in the next town over: 30 min commute by car in the morning but it would often be 90 minutes home because of traffic. They eventually put in a train line, and now it would only take about 45 minutes if she still worked there.

I grew up in a small town where we had one (1) bus that ran once in the morning and once in the evening. My town was kinda poor and not everyone could afford a car. The solution is not to get more people cars they can't afford, but to have better public transit.

Well, sure, but that's a political choice.
