(Anonymous) 2023-02-18 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)Even then, there are a lot of 2-hour drives that could be replaced by reliable inter-city train service.
Not *all* of them obviously, especially in more remote rural areas. But a lot of them!

(Anonymous) 2023-02-18 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)Like, think about parking. Parking can be a *huge* hassle and require a lot of fucking around if there aren't parking spaces, both at wherever you live to park it when it's at home, and at your destination. American cities devote huge amounts of real estate to parking, including really valuable square footage in the middle of urban cores. If that square footage could be used for other stuff, like housing or business developments, that would be great for cities economically. Using all that space for parking is a huge cost to cities, even though it's effectively invisible. And that's just one example.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-18 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)The trains can get full and I do hope that there's a special hell for people who take calls on speaker in public, but by and large it's way more convenient than taking the car for me (and all the thousands of other commuters on my route).

(Anonymous) 2023-02-19 12:42 am (UTC)(link)If is if it's a priority for the country. In the US the car manufacturers, like Elon Musk, will pay politicians to stop it from ever happening. Amtrak is legally supposed to have right-of-way on all the rail lines. Guess how much that's enforced?
Why is it we have money for endless wars and tax cuts for the rich, but not enough for healthcare and public transit?

(Anonymous) 2023-02-18 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)one, nonny didn't say ban all car trips, they said make them secondary to public transit. there are a lot of car trips that could be accomplished with public transit instead if public transit was pervasive and well-designed and reliable, and if cities were designed around limiting unnecessary driving.
two, obviously public transit is always going to be spoke-and-hub to *some* extent, there's never going to be door-to-door public transit, but you can limit that significantly with good design.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-18 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)Not to mention short flights. Brisbane-Sydney-Canberra-Melbourne should have been a fast train decades ago.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-18 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)Who said anything about flexibility and personal freedom? The secret mentioned what was best for the world at large. What is best for the world at large is to reduce the amount of cars on the road, whatever the fuel, to the bare minimum. You do this with public transit.
Public transit may be second best to people who think their personal freedom overrides the needs of the rest of the population, but I don't really care what they think. 'Cause they're wrong.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-18 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)And it's also possible to offer inter-city travel like that. But it requires planning and effort and more buy-in than most municipal and state governments seem to be willing to give.
Re: Fuck Elon Musk with a cactus
(Anonymous) 2023-02-18 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)I live in one such city right now. Before the pandemic and we switched to WFH permanently, I took the bus to work. Bus runs every 15 minutes, and the transit system has a tracker so you can see where the bus is in real time. 25 minute commute there where I could read or watch tv, compared to 15 by car (or 45 by car if the bridge was up). With an annual pass, it cost $0.60 cents per trip if I only took the bus to and from work, compared to $15 a day just for parking. Doesn't even get into the car itself, maintenance, gas, insurance, etc etc. My wife worked in the next town over: 30 min commute by car in the morning but it would often be 90 minutes home because of traffic. They eventually put in a train line, and now it would only take about 45 minutes if she still worked there.
I grew up in a small town where we had one (1) bus that ran once in the morning and once in the evening. My town was kinda poor and not everyone could afford a car. The solution is not to get more people cars they can't afford, but to have better public transit.
