I feel like there are kind of different segments of the "true crime community", and the aspect that's about exonerating innocent people and/or bringing awareness to cold cases, especially ones that involve people from marginalized groups, is something that I really appreciate.

The segment that's all soccer moms drinking wine who seem to think it's fun and entertaining and gossip about missing/murdered people like they're someone they went to high school with is just gross and makes me really uncomfortable.

the aspect that's about exonerating innocent people and/or bringing awareness to cold cases, especially ones that involve people from marginalized groups, is something that I really appreciate. I appreciate that, too. I also feel like there's maybe a possible prevention/capture aspect - like, if someone you know exhibits the observed behaviors of the killer in the true crime media, either before the crime or covering up the crime, maybe you steer clear of them or report them, depending - but I don't know how realistic that is.

And, yeah, when it feels like gossip, especially when they seem to have forgotten there was a real person with grieving loved ones, just seems ugly.

Yeah, this is my take exactly. Though it's not just soccer moms, there's plenty of men who have totally!rational!explanations! and will tell you about them endlessly.

It's like any group of fans. There are people who approach it sensibly, with moderation. And then there are the people who give the fandom a bad name - and that group might not be the majority of fans, but they're generally very loud and attract a great deal of attention as well as criticism from non-fans.
