the aspect that's about exonerating innocent people and/or bringing awareness to cold cases, especially ones that involve people from marginalized groups, is something that I really appreciate. I appreciate that, too. I also feel like there's maybe a possible prevention/capture aspect - like, if someone you know exhibits the observed behaviors of the killer in the true crime media, either before the crime or covering up the crime, maybe you steer clear of them or report them, depending - but I don't know how realistic that is.

And, yeah, when it feels like gossip, especially when they seem to have forgotten there was a real person with grieving loved ones, just seems ugly.
