Super late tech vent
(Anonymous) 2023-02-20 07:22 am (UTC)(link)And none of my backups will actually finish saving to the new to me phone from my icloud storage. Phone to phone transfer failed back when my old phone was still semi functional.
I couldn't back up to a computer because a) mine's dead b) I'm poor and can't afford a new one, and now it may be too late. I can use this phone even though it never finished backing up, but I can't run software updates or anything until the backup finishes, which it won't; it's been months.
Took it and the old phone to the apple store a couple months ago; they did exactly what my coworker and I did to just as much effect.
I can just stop the backup and lose my data that hasn't transfered, I guess. It's a lot of my books, including (not pirated, legit purchased) books not from the apple store and fanfic deleted from Ao3 I have no other backups for, as well as a handful that I purchased from ibooks that are no longer available in the US. i guess I'll just figure out how to pirate all of the revoked license stuff. If I had a desktop I'd start by downloading Calibre.
I'm so mad at myself for so rarely backing up data from my ancient computer (in the days before cloud storage) and losing tons of photos and stuff, but I'm even angrier that I actually backed up my phone for years and still stand to lose so much.
I'm extra glad for my physical media collections rn though.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-20 12:14 pm (UTC)(link)Is there a way to access a PC in a library or internet café (do these even still exist?) where you could try backing things up on a usb stick?
I have my own tech gripe: Got my non-functional tablet back from the official customer service repair shop after 6 weeks without anything getting done because it's outside the warranty and they refuse to repair it via goodwill. It's been used very little, looks completely new with no scratch or speck of dust and was very, very likely damaged/broken by a faulty software update installation, so through no fault of mine. Joy!

(Anonymous) 2023-02-20 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)And as far as my dead phone goes; internet cafes aren't really a thing anymore here, but print/fedex storefronts that have pay to use computers exist. And I work for a public library.
None of them that I know of anywhere nearby have Macs, or itunes installed on windows pcs, and none will allow users to download or install software onto them.
Some university libraries have macs, but their computers are for student use only and it's been six years since I was any kind of uni student.
I'm absolutely going to buy an adapter so I can plug a usb stick with tons of memory into this phone and figure out how to back up stuff to it, though. And ask around to see if there's somewhere I can pay to get any data off the harddrives of my computers. Dipping into savings for that seems frivolous, but also I have very few photos of my mom and a bunch of pets from the last almost 20 years that weren't on one of three harddrives I have sitting around. Worth a shot, anyway.
