Half of my family lived under the same empire, but they came from a slavic country and were either Austrian nor Hungarian.

Ethnicity and in part, culture, really doesn't have much to do with political divisions. Native Americans are obviously living in the US and are Americans, but they're also ethnically and culturally Cherokee, Sioux, Zuni, etc.

Many of our European ancestors lived within the boundaries of the Roman empire, but that doesn't make us Romans.

Get a DNA test if you're really curious about your family's ethnic roots. I match a lot of very old Black Sea region Scythian samples, so that led me to learn more about what their culture was like.
