When I was a kid, I kind of thought it was a career/lifestyle with a specific aesthetic. Like cowboys or pirates or ninjas. I was probably in high school before I learned differently. The world before the internet was full of weird ideas with no earthly way of debunking them.

Yeah, same. I thought it was just a term used for people who lived their lives traveling around as a group and that anyone could be a gypsy if they met that criteria. It wasn't until years later that I learned it referred to an actual specific group of real people.

It has absolutely been used in that sense, yes.

There are many traveller communities, who are non Romani, who still use it as their preferred identity too. All romani are gypsies, but not all gypsies are romani.

The stereotypical "gypsies" from TV and movies that are the subject of this secret are 100% based on the Romani and not, for example, Irish Travellers.

This is true. In my country, the term for gypsy gets collectively used for all types of traveling folk and is not exclusive for just Sinti and Roma people and while even among them, some do in fact prefer the term as a self-descriptor it's a pretty negative term that shouldn't be used anymore. It's kinda the same as with the N-word - black people can use this as a self-descriptor all they want but maybe don't use it as a non black person.
