I also dressed as a "gypsy" for Halloween as a kid, a decade before you, and I also had no idea of the context. The strangest thing for me looking back is that my dad actually was prejudiced against Romani people. What did he think about me dressing in that costume? He's dead now, so I can't talk to him about it, but I do wonder.
